(13,190 posts)There plan is to hold on to congress which they are confident they will because of rigged gerrymandering and to get that Senate. The problem our side has is we don't vote in the midterm elections. So we must work now to get the troops motivated young people single women and Hispanics they are the main ones who don't vote midterms.I don't know what Debbie Wassermann-Schultz is doing about voter registration drives.

Cool - I love the smell of republican desperation. Should be a fun midterm.

(5,058 posts)Even if the Republicans did win the senate, they would most likely hold less than 2/3 of the seats.
An impeachment trial would fail, just like it did in 99. Obama would be acquitted and the
Republicans would have wasted the time and money of the American People. They would
be the losers not Obama.

(50,552 posts)The GOP was planning to impeach Obama on August 28, 2008. That was the day he accepted the nomination.
And why it won't happen: The Republicans don't have to "take the Senate" to make an impeachment attempt feasible. They have to take a two-thirds majority in the Senate because without 67 Republicans who believe their only job is to overthrow the president, an impeachment attempt will fail. Worse for them, they have to be looking forward to 2016, when 24 of their number are up for reelection.
This means to make an impeachment attempt feasible (in other words, to have any chance at all of getting rid of the president) they have to flip every open Democratic seat PLUS retain all the seats they have now. If Alison Lundergan Grimes beats Mitch O'Connell the game is over. If Wendy Davis wins the Texas governor's mansion and has coattails the game is over. If they can't flip Oregon, Hawaii, Colorado, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey, Mass and Rhode Island (this is not a "pick three" deal - they have to take ALL those Democratic strongholds) the game is over. If any one of the four women currently serving as Republican Senators decides they've had enough of the GOP's shit and changes party, the game is over. There is a LOT of risk here and it's all on the GOP's side.
Next: impeach Obama over a law that was passed by both Houses of Congress, duly signed by the president and declared constitutional by the Supreme Court? When the fuck did following the law become an impeachable offense? Under that theory the cops could set up a checkpoint in front of my house and send to state prison everyone caught driving with a set of valid license plates on their car. I know, I know, they're going after him for saying that if you like your healthcare plan you can keep it. Uhh...guys, you could impeach Clinton for lying under oath, but Obama wasn't under oath when he said that. If you can impeach for something a president says in a stump speech, what is the proper punishment for lying the country into a war? Twelve hours of the bastinado at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial or seppuku in the White House Rose Garden?
The other thing they have to look at: what happens if they're successful? Everyone on their side looks at the chain of succession and thinks, well gol-lee gee if we can replace Boehner, impeach Obama then impeach Biden, we can have President Paul Ryan! Nope. Forget the logistics of attempting to impeach two presidents in two years, and consider that the first thing President Biden will do is pick someone they really fucking hate as his VP.
