Utah mom to give birth to daughter's daughter

A 58-year-old Utah woman is set to give birth in a few weeks — to her granddaughter.

Julia Navarro is serving as a gestational surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law.

Lorena McKinnon says after struggling with fertility issues, she and her husband tried to find a surrogate.

After several offers fell through, the Provo woman says her mother stepped up and offered to carry the baby.

The couple says by having Navarro as a surrogate they're saving about half the $60,000 typical cost of using a surrogate.

We threw up our hands at the fertility industrial complex - I'm figuring still - out in Utah - to cull and harvest eggs and sperm they had to spend $25K.

No way they used her mom's eggs - too old. Her eggs probably had something seriously wrong - possibly a very low AMH?

I read these stories and understand people think they are big miracles but the back end to the scam is that more people pay $100K for something that is just luck than get the baby they are desperate for.

Glad this worked out for them - but a PSA - it's heartbreaking and expensive anything BUT easy. It's never as 'easy' as this feel good story makes it out to be.

I've gotta start writing about my experience. The more of us that do - the more we can inform people that for every baby - there are 9 other couples bankrupt.
