Ernie Chambers (D-NE) introduces bill to end mountain lion hunting (NE)

Senator Chambers has been a friend of women, labor, etc. as long as I can remember. Chambers was a young barber when he first appeared in the Oscar-nominated 1966 documentary film "A Time for Burning". Can be rented at Netflix.

LINCOLN — Sen. Ernie Chambers wants to kill Nebraska's new mountain lion season.

The Omaha senator introduced a bill on Wednesday's opening day of the 2014 session to repeal hunting of big cats in the state. Nebraska's inaugural mountain lion season opened Jan. 1, and the first two licensed hunters have since killed one male cougar apiece.

Chambers said the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has not convinced him the state's small population of mountain lions represents a threat to people or livestock. The commission authorized the season, and it was generally welcomed by farmers and ranchers in northwest Nebraska, where an established breeding population of the cats exists.

“This savagery is uncivilized, and it's certainly not hunting,” he said.
