Pa. pizza shop delivers medicines during cold snap

The Associated Press
January 8, 2014

LIGONIER, Pa
. — A western Pennsylvania pizza shop has been delivering prescription medicines and other supplies to ill and elderly residents so they don't have to go outside in the bitter cold.

Tom Wynkoop, owner of Fox's Pizza Den in Ligonier, tells WPXI-TV (http://bit.ly/1eGXJQ0 ) that he tweeted his offer because his community about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh has a lot of elderly residents.

Wynkoop told those in need to call his cellphone to arrange deliveries of prescription medicines and other products — no strings attached. That's right: Folks don't have to order food from Wynkoop's shop to get help.

Wynkoop says his shop has made four deliveries. He says, "You have to be there for your residents." The region was hit with record-low, subzero temperatures on Tuesday. Temperatures were subfreezing by Wednesday.

- Mr. Wynkoop, if I should ever find myself in Ligonier, Pa. I'll no doubt be there for the pizza!

Whether it was medicine or food, Wynkoop said he would deliver pretty much anything to his neighbors, if they needed it.

"I know how it's hard for elderly people to get out, and we live in a elderly community, and we're small and we're close, and you have to be there for your residents," Wynkoop said. "As a person, you just do it. You don't expect anything for it. It's just that I'm a pretty direct person and sometimes, as you see on the media, it shows. If you need it, call. We'll get it to you."

Tom Wynkoop of Fox's Pizza Den tweeted, “This goes out to our valued customers. If you have any medical history that involves respiratory issues, PLEASE, PLEASE do not attempt to leave the house. Due to the extreme weather conditions, please call my cell phone and I will do everything in my power to have things brought to you (medications, food, etc.). No food ordering required.”
