No, Niagara Falls didn't freeze during the Polar Vortex (I live here, btw)

Seeing a few threads popping up about Niagara Falls freezing. It has not and it did not during the vortex. The water has been steadily going over the falls all week, even during the coldest temperatures.

You can see for yourselves at http://www.fallsviewcam.com/

The ice on the river is normal for this time of year. But you can clearly see the Horseshoe Falls and the American falls continuing unabated.

the spray from the falls freezes on the nearby trees, making them sparkle. And it's a lot quieter without the hordes of tourists.

The falls themselves don't freeze, but I remember seeing a thin crust of ice on the surface that can give that impression.

referring to the icicles and the cool 'frosting' of the trees and surrounding area. But you could clearly see the falls were not entirely frozen, just really great photos of the freezing surrounding area. I love Niagara Falls, I always say it is the one place that when you see it in person, it is even BETTER than any photos you may have seen.

And they are very beautiful. They can also be very strong. With a good wind, the mist can coat snow on some of the islands. You can then walk on top of the snow without breaking the crust or even leaving a dent.

Winter at the falls is very beautiful, but nothing the UK article references is unusual or even indicative of a partial freeze.
