New Jersey lawmakers investigating the George Washington Bridge lane closing scandal had a go at former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive David Wildstein on Thursday. Next on their list is former Gov. Chris Christie (R) aide Bridget Kelly.
New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D), who has been leading the Assembly's investigation of the scandal, said in a radio interview Thursday that the Assembly's Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee wants to speak to a number of figures associated with the scandal.
"I think next will be Bridget Kelly," Wisniewski told the radio station WCBS. "We need to hear from her."
Wisniewski said that while no subpoenas have yet been issued, the members of the committee "need to understand what (Kelly) meant" when she sent her now infamous "time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee" email to Wildstein on Aug. 13. Lawmakers also want to know "under whose authorization (Kelly) sent that email."

Will she also plead the Fifth?
Chris Christie's press conference claims don't add up

Here is an excellent post by a new DUer asking some relevant questions: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024303912#post3

(2,419 posts)that high level seasoned political operatives like Bill Baroni and David Wildstein were taking their directions from Bridget Kelly doesn't pass the smell test. Nor does it add up that she was acting on her own. Nor does it add up that her boss (and by extension) Christie had no clue this was taking place. And while we're at it, administration spokesperson Drewniak was in that e-mail chain. If somebody in NJ burps and it sounds even vaguely anti-Christie, Drewniak has some snarky retort straight from the Governor's office.
She needs to be next, but don't expect answers. Ms. Kelly will likely plead the 5th 100 times as well. Make it a drinking game. Just don't expect to get much done the day she testifies, take a shot every time she invokes the privilege and you will soon be on the floor.

(28,167 posts)Unfortunately, losing $400 Million in Race To The Top money didn't meet with Federal, State and Civil penalties.
With this case... I can't say that. But she's looking like she will take the fall.
If a deal is made for future employment/compensation (ie. appointed job, money, etc), she'll be permanently scarred.

Bret Schundler took the fall for Christie's mistake (after two unsuccessful attempts to find other fall guys).
He wasn't taken care of.
And Schundler was supposed to be a good friend of Christie's.

(1,782 posts)When does a subordinate who was intimately involved with the crimes of a public official spill everything? When s/he has immunity.
I don't know how it works at the state level. Maybe they can give her immunity from charges against state laws? If that's not enough, maybe there's someone they can bring in at the federal level who has authority to promise her immunity at that level as well?
It would make sense to give up the chance to prosecute her if they're pretty sure she was acting for Christie, not on her own.

(26,311 posts)What I'm curious about is the mechanics of offering the deal.
Is it like the cop shows where the defendants lawyer says "give my client immunity and we will tell you this this and this"?
Or is there a chance of immunizing someone and still ending up with squat ?

(1,782 posts)She might need not only immunity but maybe a new, secret identity as well. It's not just the law that she probably has to protect herself from.
