(3,557 posts)As far as I know, we're the only region in the US that, when walmart announced their intentions to open a store there, successfully fought off and kept walmart out.
That is until 2006, since then they have grown even more.

(3,122 posts)I used to go to walmart a couple of times a week. Then I decided low prices weren't worth supporting a company that treats their employees so badly so I stopped shopping there...

(5,364 posts)I know it all began in Ark and basically radiated outward but if you look closely you can see that large metro areas in politically blue places were among the last to be infested with this chain.

(12,448 posts)It was during the capitalist anarchy of '80s that it changed from a store that brought American made products into communities that had few or none of what we call Mom & Pop store and sold it at a reasonable price.
A lot of those towns in the middle of the country only had one store and paid the price always extracted by a monopoly.
When you live in a town called McLaren, in McLaren county, and the only place to buy what you need is McLaren's Feed & Supply, the McLaren car and equipment dealerships, and McLaren's Department store when you drive into town, a new Walmart looks pretty good (unless your name is McLaren).
