Has anyone else here seen "Philomena"?

It raises some very difficult issues, especially for Catholics who may be viewing it. I wondered, without revealing any spoilers, how that was received.

As a film, I thought it was extremely well done, and well acted. Dench was as usual fabulous as was the rest of the wonderful cast, esp. Steve Coogan as the writer tasked to tell her story as a pregnant teen in a Magdalen laundry who searches during her lifetime to find her child. It was horrendous and moving and even humorous. Just a well done job all around.

No spoilers from me. But at points I was howling and then crying.

It was everything you say - funny, sad, infuriating, heart wrenching.

If they would just have told her the truth when she started looking. Sigh.

When I went to see it, I had no idea what it was about. I remember when the worse thing that could happen to a young girl was to get pregnant before marriage. I can honestly say that this is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.

The Magdalen Laundries are a perfect case for separation of church and state.

As a Catholic, as a mother, as a friend it devastated me. Judi Dench is incredible as always, a very well told, thoroughly sad story.

but I noticed the warnings in other replies. I like both Coogan and Judy Dench anyway so I will make a point of seeing it.

off topic : my son who is 41 saw 12 Years a Slave this week and it really upset him.

I heard a very interesting interview with "Philomena" and her daughter on NPR. Her story was exceptionally moving. Her thoughts were that it (the movie) was not "anti-Catholic" ... she and her daughter remain devout Catholics
