General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you use any tools while you browse DU?
I mean things like browser extensions, screen shot software or other things that you find helpful. I like fireshot when I want to capture something I think might go away.
What would your perfect DU browsing browser extension do?

(26,449 posts)In firefox, it's under the orange tab that says firefox on the upper left and then click ad-ons.
They are pieces of software that do things while browsing. Some block ads, others do other stuff.

(23,156 posts)And that would probably let me fiddle with add-ons.
I always feel a bit suspicious about add-ons. Plus, a couple of years ago someone here posted a cool one for earthquakes, and I just loved it. Then, newer additions of Firefox refuse to allow it. So my attitude is, why bother.

(45,851 posts)If it was new with a new price tag we couldn't afford to let it sit idle as much as it does, we have a small, unique niche market and machining is only a fairly limited portion of the work which is somewhat sporadic anyway.
The mill had been stored in a barn for about a decade with broken electronics and was destined for the scrap yard when we got it, I cleaned actual rat nests out of the knee and dirt dauber nests out of nearly every hole during the restoration process.

(27,247 posts)but this is the first time I had ever heard of using the Apple-shift-3 shortcut for taking screenshots. So I tried it and it saved the screenshot automatically onto my desktop.

Mrs. Potter: [ notices something ] Hey, wait a minute..
Fred Garvin: What?
Mrs. Potter: What is all that stuff?
Fred Garvin: Oh, uh.. that's my rather elaborate network of trusses. I will need your help with a couple of these. I got the old hernia truss here.. and I got a spleen truss, it opens up with a couple of snaps here in the back..
Mrs. Potter: No, I don't think so.. you know, I.. I.. I think this is a little too much for me, I, uh..
Fred Garvin: No, no.. it's just a couple of snaps in the back. You know, you just gotta make sure you don't touch the rupture, that's all..

(29,414 posts)I highly recommend watching if you like excellent science fiction with a strong dose of political intrigue. Yes, it's anime. But it's of the highest quality for writing and animation as you'll see on TV.
And the Tachikomas are fun to watch and listen to their discussions/arguments among themselves. They are, indeed, a hoot!

Voila!
In Firefox I really like Quick Java. It puts toggle icons at the bottom of the browser that enables/disables anything I don't want to run in the browser like Java, Java script, animated pix, flash, silverlight, cookies, images, CSS, proxies from toolbar.. all just as needed. It's fast and efficient. One regular use I have is to get around that quantserve hang. I just hit the JS button turning off java script and the page comes right up, then turn it back on again if I want. Lots of useful.... uses.
on edit: I actually use Iceweasel not Firefox. It's an open version of FF.

(8,543 posts)I use FireFox and employ the following 'tools' primarily for the functions listed:
userContent.css file to hide signatures, hide the icons and post counts by usernames in posts, change the edit text from red to grey and move it to the right side of the post, change the new reply indicator on the My Posts tab to just be underlined text instead of coloring the tab yellow, hide the no-avatar grey avatar, add a rounded border and drop shadow to excerpt boxes, and more stuff I can't even remember.
GreaseMonkey to change the My Subscriptions tab into a My Bookmarks tab, change the username in posts to link to profile pages instead of journals and also open them in a new tab, ignore threads by author, create checkboxes on DU mail pages to delete multiple PM's without having to open them, and probably a couple other things I've forgotten.
Adblock Plus to hide large image files in signatures (pretty much anything over 1/2 Mb).
Paste Email Plus for pasting code in posts - mainly just to add a rounded border and inset drop shadow to my excerpt boxes.
I have the userContent.css and GreaseMonkey stuff set up to work only on the www.democraticunderground.com domain, I set a custom user agent in FireFox to display the mobile view when I use election.democraticunderground.com, and I use sync.democraticunderground.com to see what it looks like without any of my customizations.
When I want to save something (which is not too often) I usually just save the whole page as an HTML file - it normally doesn't take up much space and then I know I'm not missing anything.
