You know those rear window stickers of daddy, mommy, kids, pets...

where you can document the entirety of your family household for other drivers to appreciate, for whatever reason.

I saw one display that delighted me no end.

Two mommy stickers and three cat stickers.

Loved it. It's the friendly use of the normative form that delighted me so much... merely, "Here is our family, notated in the way one notates their family"

I assume everyone else in the world has seen window stickers of "non-traditional" families (in addition to zombie families, aliens and all the other spin-offs) , but I hadn't. In my boring suburb it was a novelty, and a welcome sight.

what is wrong with the ones that have the spouse and the kids if that is what represents your family? I have a husband and two kids. If I were to get stickers to represent my family that is what I would put on my car. I am proud of my family even if we are not a hip, cool, out of the norm family. I guess if I wanted to fit in and look cool I could make sure that the sticker of my daughter were that of a bisexual because she is a bisexual although I don't know how I would depict that in a sticker.

you are coming from. I have a Buddha sticker on my car and one of the reasons I have it there is because I was feeling oppressed by all the crosses I saw everywhere I went. My father is evangelical Christian and I also I have to listen to his horrible televangelist shows all the time.

Especially the ones I've seen with just the mom figure with a sign over where the dad used to be saying "position vacant"

All that is is a sign to nefarious types reading: VULNERABLE

course that works for newly single dads too...when I was one creepers came out of the wood work to offer "comfort"

In one of the seasons, John Lithgow played a serial killer. He saw a family getting out of a car with those stickers that said, " the so and so family" and listed the family members' names. He used that info to lure a little boy and kidnap him.

I see stickers like I mentioned above - they list the family's last name and each little stick figure says the first name. I don't care for the family stickers one way or another, but the identifying characteristics that some folks put on their vehicles make me nervous.

I wonder if there are any cases outside of a fictional TV show to indicate that having kids names or the number of family members indicated on ones vehicle with stickers might actually cause one to be at higher risk of anything.

There's a lot of things in Dexter that just aren't reality based, and I would hate to see anyone making decisions based purely on that, any more than I would want them to make their decisions based on the X-Files. Or 3rd Rock from the Sun.

I have heard local law enforcement folks give safety talks and warn about putting person information like this out there, and they specifically warned about stickers like these. I don't know if they had cases to back it up, or just thought it was common sense advice.

Iirc they popped up around the time it became normal to install a car seat in the back seat because airbags were becoming the norm in the front.

There are window stickers you can put on children's bedroom windows (and for that matter stickers that indicated what pets might be found in your home) for similar reasons in case of a house fire.

So someone puts a sign on their car to be sure that first responders look for their baby in case of an accident and that pisses you off so much that you want to blow their baby's eardrums out. Oooh, yay you!

I thought they were for me, when I lose control of my car because the brakes failed, and in a split second, I'm supposed to swerve to avoid the B-O-B car, and smash into the other one instead.

Or, maybe its for yuppies who act like they're the first people on the planet to have a kid.

I had to think about this for a while. It looks like they added a big kid from another decal set, then tore him off and sloppily reapplied.

The only normal families you know are the ones you don't know very well.

On edit: This was seen south of Cleveland, so maybe that's LeBron James on the car of a Cavs fan who loved him like a son until he moved to Miami. Apparently, all is forgiven.

I've never seen them in any store I've been to. Then again, in my town, there are ten places to buy a car, six places to buy a tire, and no big-box drug store. I had to throw up my hands in disgust when the local Staples didn't have an Avery label size I needed for a project. I've given up shopping for anything but groceries in my town, you HAVE to get stuff from the Internet these days.
