Pope Francis encourages breastfeeding in Sistine Chapel: If they are hungry, mothers, feed them, without thinking twiceDuring a ceremony on Sunday in which he baptized 32 children, Pope Francis implored the mothers in attendance one of whom wasnt married in the Church to breastfeed their children, should they become hungry.
Today, the choir will sing, but the most beautiful choir of all is the choir of the infants who will make a noise. Some will cry because they are not comfortable or because they are hungry, the Pope said, according to The Independent.
If they are hungry, mothers, feed them, without thinking twice. Because they are the most important people here.

How often does THAT happen?

(25,406 posts)So the people who speak the most sense are black women who are having lots of sex?

(10,559 posts)"Celibate" and "man" were both about him not having children, or having held a hungry/crying infant (which did interesting things to my body when I was nursing/pumping). His race was because "old white men" in positions of power usually say things that aren't of benefit to women and children, and this was THE OPPOSITE of that.
For a guy with zero experience with hungry babies, I am in complete shock that he is using "good sense" because I think supporting breast feeding mothers is a good thing. It showed ... dare I say it? Empathy and compassion for the experiences of OTHER PEOPLE.
Wow.
Apologies if my comment came across offensively.

(45,319 posts)Are you opposed to reproductive choice and equality?
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)But since I have never heard a high level church official (celibate, old, childless) adamantly and clearly express support for the needs of women and hungry babies with clear language and good intent, I am going to celebrate it, because it gives me HOPE.
It is a baby step. We still have a long way to go.
And we aren't giving up on any of the rest of the questions you raised, either!

(45,319 posts)I assume those who promote anti gay and anti choice activists agree with those activists. Because as long as they assist those in power who are sexist homophobes, they might as well just come out as against equality and choice.
Your post dismisses bigotry and right wing sexism as unimportant compared to inviting breast feeding. 'It's worth it, he said breastfeeding, so who cares about choice or equality!!!!'
The Francis fans never favored equality, that's why they dig him he gives voice to their prejudices, a bigoted voice protected on DU because of his religion, although other religious leaders are not celebrated here, just those of that one religion. Others who oppose choice and equality are castigated for that. Francis, well, he's special, his bigoted venom is so charmingly old world! He's just adorable!
Hypocrites are hypocrites.

(15,682 posts)The only place I was not "allowed" to breastfeed my first daughter was at my in-law's house. Devout Catholic that she is, she called my breasts my "sins" and sent me upstairs to a bedroom to breastfeed in isolation. I bet her head explodes today.

She just had a very twisted personal theology. I have never met another Catholic that would have called a breast a sin.

Sorry you had to deal with a MIL like that. Mine is stuffy and probably disapproved of my breast feeding, but at least she knew when to shut the hell up.

(118,268 posts)uncommonly down-to-earth approach to the practice in an interview with La Stampa last month. Recounting an encounter with a mother and her wailing newborn son at a general audience, he said he told her to feed him then and there. "She was modest," he recalled. "She didn't want to breastfeed in public as the pope was going past" ...

(16,843 posts)make the babies quiet and also to break the ice at the ceremony. These parents were in the Sistine Chapel and the Pope was baptizing their child. I'm sure they were nervous, and he was putting everybody at ease. This wasn't any encouragement to breastfeed. I'm not saying he would've cared if they did, but it wasn't what he was trying to get across at the moment. Jeez, this fascination with everything this guy does really gets ridiculous sometimes. Next thing you know, he'll be performing a wedding and everybody will say he's okay with adultery because the bride wore an off-white dress. It's silly, and people that do this look like fools.

(36,286 posts)that must be covered:
Women:
Women can wear trousers, capri pants and skirts and dresses are permitted however they cannot be shorter than knee length and shoulders must be covered.
In very hot weather a shawl or large scarf/Pashmina can be draped around the shoulders for visiting the sites.
Bare shoulders and short skirts are not permitted and again come prepared to cover up if wearing shorts.

I've been to the vatican as a visitor and have never had problems getting in. Sure, they want you to dress a little more modestly, but it's about respect and not that you are viewed as a temptation.
I've been to Buddhist temples in Thailand, and many of them require women to wear skirts. Holy sites in the Middle East? I have no problems dressing the way they ask me to.
