Wisconsin State Capitol's first floor doors unlocked for first time since 9-11

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - For the first time in over a dozen years, the doors to the State Capitol's first floor were unlocked Monday morning.

The doors atop the Capitol four grand staircases had been shuttered ever since the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001.

Visitors and employees have since been required to the enter the statehouse on the ground floor, at street level around the Capitol Square. Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch said it was an "understandable precaution" to lock the upper entry doors in 2001. That was because, "Our nation had been attacked, and no one knew what the next target would be."

Now, he says it's both a "literal and symbolic gesture" to reopen the doors with a focus on open and transparent government.
