GOProud co-founder: ‘Cancer’ of LGBT bigotry is going to kill the Republican Party

(Why is it I always get the mind's eye picture of an abused wife when GOProud speaks?)

Co-founder of LGBT conservative group GOProud Jimmy LaSalvia likened being a gay man and “team player” in the Republican Party to being the parent of a crack-addicted teen. In an interview with Raw Story, LaSalvia said that the GOP is going to have to “hit bottom” to break its addiction to bigotry and anti-LGBT hate.

In a blog post on Monday, LaSalvia announced that after years of struggling to change the Republican Party’s hardline anti-LGBT stance from within, he is giving up and leaving the party.

“I’ve found myself in a situation where I’m beating my head against a wall,” said LaSalvia, “trying to help an organization that does not share my values. My values do not tolerate bigotry.”

“I have spent my whole career working to create an atmosphere where gay conservatives could live their lives openly and work in the conservative movement,” he said, but again and again, the Republican Party has missed its chances to denounce naked bigotry in its ranks. “The Republicans made a decision to be on the wrong side.”

If for no other reason than the fact that it excludes a larger percentage of the electorate.

Funny how a white man, who happens to be gay, only sees the prejudice that is directed at himself.

What were the odds?

of the Dixiecrats.". I laughed out loud. A large segment of the most bigoted elements in the Repub Party ARE the former Dixiecrats, who left the Dems because they were so enraged about the 1964 Civil Rights Act!

The reason we fail to sustain change is that over and over again we proclaim that conservatism is on the brink of death and we don't have to worry anymore. And then it comes back (slightly more modern each time at least) and we have to deal with Reagan, Bush, 2010 midterms, etc.

Let's not forget, that despite the fact these people are leaving the Republican Party, they still support all of the wicked and destructive economic and foreign policies of the right-wing. Just because they're right on one issue doesn't change that fact.

but left the party, he's black, gay, retired military officer and couldn't take it anymore. It started with the 2000 Bush campaign when the rightwing religious fundies took over.
