(9,124 posts)Target's very popular too.
"Fleet Farm", "Farm and Fleet" and outlet malls gobbling up the rest.
JC Penny used get 7 cents out of every retail dollar spent in one location... doubt they get more then .5 now.

(5,946 posts)I get anxiety attacks in that store. Kind of like I do in some malls. Someone suggested it might be some scent that makes you want to shop sprayed into the air. or someone else suggested it might be the formaldehyde sprayed on new clothing. I don't have this problem in most stand alone stores or in outlets.

(9,124 posts)the layouts are funky and it strikes me as rather sterile, prcing is fair though... If I have to go into a mall store, I go to a Boston Store or a Marshal Fields and look for sales.

(45,481 posts)The HVAC is probably supplying too little ventilation air. That's probably just your local store.

(5,946 posts)The only places it doesn't happen is in cheap stores like K mart in not the best neighborhood and food stores and outlets, so I buy most of my clothes in outlet stores, but a whole bunch closed recently so I don't know what I will do for jeans and stuff. It happens in most mall stores, except in a small expensive mall in Princeton and in Barnes and nobles in the mall areas. I also have problems in any store that has scented candles or body soaps and scented stuff like that. I used to just be able to avoid those parts of stores, but it seems to be every where, I am going to believe they scent the stores.

(45,481 posts)I have a mild allergy to them and they give me a headache if I am around them. Haven't noticed it much in Kohls, but I get a headache, even with a quick walk past a perfume counter in Macys.

(5,946 posts)I feel like the building is closing in on me and have to escape. But I am in large buildings all the time, I do have a strong distaste for fragrances, how hard is that for people to remember not to put perfume on if they are going to ride in your car - sheesh. I was fine until I bought a house near Famous fragrance and flavors factory ( 2 miles away and closed for 10 years now) Now I can't sleep on sheets that have been dried with softener. Still can deal with cigarette smoke and stinks (dog poo, what ever and bleach), but fragrances drive me nuts.

(22,541 posts)And two stores in MS. I still have relatives there. It occurred to me that they're both very conservative places. They might have boycotted and when they boycott it's forever. They don't forget teh gay. Ever. Because they're assholes who think it's a sin. The worst sin ever no less.
Do NOT click on this.

Oh!!! Do NOT click on that. It shows how asshole-y they ARE. They're PROUD of getting the CEO fired for the positive ads on Father's Day featuring 2 Dads. The article is by the Family Research Council. That's all you need to know. I found the swill to prove my point so you don't have to.

(16,844 posts)that 30 year-old indoor mall and replacing it with a strip mall. That mall had been doing horrible business for a long time, anyway, and there were few stores left in it. I can't blame Penney's for giving up on that location.

(38,506 posts)One of the places is in my local mall. I really hope they replace it with something and the workers can get back to work soon. Lord have mercy.

(6,819 posts)A couple of those are dying malls with very high vacancy rates.
One is a successful mall, but probably has extremely high rental rates, and lots of other companies that would want to sublease the space (assuming the lease is not expiring).

(7,720 posts)It has almost no foot traffic and the J. C. Penney store is not visible from the road. Customers drive around to the back and enter from an outside door. What happened to the mall is that Walmart built a supercenter on a different road about a mile away. That shifted the retail traffic away from the indoor mall. These 'lifestyle' retail developments are killing indoor malls. I can't remember the last time I went inside a mall.

(20,629 posts)dying for probably at least a dozen years or so. They've been doing some remodeling in recent years to change the configuration to more of a strip mall-type design, but Penney's had been struggling for business for many years.

(68,918 posts)Christmas 1998 we went up there with my grandfather (gone 11 years now) and bought way too much Packer emblazoned stuff. A small story, but that is also where BabyG had his first picture with Santa taken. All of this after a visit to Schreiner's of course.
