First Nation Student Wins Right to Wear 'Got Land?' Hoodie After School Ban
"Got Land? Thank an Indian."
Some people in Saskatchewan, Canada, apparently didnt want to.
And that, for a few days, got 13-year-old eighth-grade student Tenelle Starr, Star Blanket Cree Nation, barred from wearing the sweatshirt at school 56 miles from Regina, Saskatchewan.
Tenelle excitedly wore her new Christmas present to school after the holidays, CBC News reported on January 14. The question, Got Land? is emblazoned on the front, while the back is adorned with, Thank an Indian. Then school officials told her she could not wear it.
"They told me to remove my sweater because it was offending other people," Tenelle told CBC News, referring to school officials.

(20,582 posts)1. I had just read about this in the Leader Post ...... good for her!
- removed huge picture
It was at Balcarres school.
Jeff Menard, the designer of the sweatshirt:
Menard said that when he wears his sweatshirt he mostly gets compliments. However, there was an incident last week, where a stranger confronted him over it.
This guy comes up to me and says, We pay for you, you guys get everything for freea we pay our taxes, Menard said, adding that he told the stranger that he works for Canada Post and pays taxes as well.
He was willing to fight me over my hoodie.
Menard said hes sold thousands of sweatshirts bearing the slogan, and hes hoping to give one to Neil Young on Thursday at the singers Honour the Treaties concert.

(8,646 posts)2. I saw it on the news last night.
I'm glad she can wear it, and I like the exposure they gave the maker of the hoodies. It's a shame they still have to deal with ignorant stereotypes.

Some/most of the comments after the article are just pathetic. She's a brave girl.
