I really don't know if you can call it 'legit' - but you know what I mean.
The other day while reading about the Crisp Crispy GWB scandal I got to thinking - what if the Mafia in a move to get out of the Elliot Ness days business made it their goal to take over a political party in an attempt to make money and gain power in a way that shielded them from the law.
I see another Godfather movie in the making here.
I guess with all the award shows in Hollywood lately - I been influenced to think like this.
I already posted earlier that the Koch Brothers remind me of a James Bond/Ian Flemming villain.
Just rambling now - too much wine with dinner.
That's it - those are my thoughts for the night.

One of the most salient details left out of popular culture entertainment of those times, is that Nucky & company were the newcomers, the underdogs fighting to take a piece of the action already owned by the really big boys in the Democratic Party.

(22,666 posts)They control the GOP and most Dems as well. If you wanted to look at criminal, psychopathic elements of our society and economy today - corporations would be at or near #1 on the list.

(13,616 posts)The Mafia are much more honorable. If somebody is a screw up, they get killed, as opposed to W. If half the GOP were in a mafia family, they would have been whacked in their 20's.

(12,448 posts)I'm pretty consistently amazed at the apparently infinite capacity of white America to subscribe to the concept of a small number of influential people having the capacity to build and run a criminal empire, but are consistently, and adamantly determined to not see that the game was over long before the Italians were even born.
The parasite class predates the Cosa Nostra by centuries. They were here when the first Pilgrim murdered his host in order to steal his food and belongings. They are every family name you know or have ever heard of coming from the eastern seaboard and more than a few you've likely never heard.
The American parasite class shows those Italians to be the unranked amateurs that they are. Their "Great Organization", "this thing of ours" is nothing but a feeble shadow, parroting the true wealth and power that the real rulers wield.

(25,237 posts)That is what I meant - organized crime - as that is a more generic term and isn't associated with any particular nationality - like maybe the term 'mafia' is.
My premise is that 'organized crime' wanted to insinuate themselves into what most people would think are respectable businesses - and politics - (though many of us don't respect most politicians) - is considered more respectable than getting involved with drugs, liquor, gambling, etc - those things that we associate with gangsters of the past to and as portrayed in such movies like the Godfather, Scarface, etc.
Think about it - if they went into politics - they get to make the laws. They get to exempt themselves from the laws. They get to break the laws. They get to change the laws when something else comes along that they can get their hands into. They get to be above the law.
I point to the Repug Party because they seem like thugs to me and kind of fit the above description.
As many have pointed out in this NJ GWB Crisp Crispy scandal - it has the look and Soprano like feel.
I guess that's what motivated me to put this post up in the first place.

You're not wrong, and the scions of today's Wynn's, Pritzikers, Adelsons. Clintons, Cheneys, Emanuels, Blankfeins, and Dimons will constitute the next generation of parasites that will continue to feed off the American worker.
It's not going to end until we end it.
