By Steve Benen
We talked earlier about Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer (D), who told MSNBCs Steve Kornacki over the weekend that two top officials in Gov. Chris Christies (R) administration told her to advance a local development deal, and in exchange, her city would receive more post-Sandy relief funding. The governors office is challenging the mayors story this afternoon with an easy-to-check claim.
At issue is an event in May of last year, when a group of officials gathered for a public television special on Sandy recovery. Zimmer sat alongside Richard Constable, Christies community affairs commissioner, and according to the mayor, Constable told her if she moved forward with a specific development deal, they money would start flowing to Hoboken.
Today, Christies office disseminated a piece from the Asbury Park Press, quoting Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty (D), who was part of the same panel.
Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty, who also was a panelist, said he didnt hear a conversation between Zimmer and Constable.
I sat next to Mayor Zimmer and, if I recall correctly, (Constable) was on my other side, Doherty said.
If true, that would be a pretty important detail Zimmers version of events makes clear that she was sitting next to the Christie administration official. But is Dohertys memory accurate?
It is not. As is clear in the above photo, Dohertys mistaken. Seated in the front row, from right to left, is Doherty, then Zimmer, then Constable. Patrick Murray, the director of Monmouth Universitys polling institute, is on the far-left side of that front row.
Its not surprising that the governors office hopes to undermine the accuracy of the mayors claims, but in this case, her version is at least plausible she was seated next to Constable, just as she claimed. Dohertys account, which Team Christie is circulating, is simply mistaken.

New Jersey officials compared the $100 estimate with the approximately $50 per cubic yard that a spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie said had been paid under a contract negotiated directly with AshBritt, a debris-hauling company in Florida. By comparison, removing standard residential trash from New York after it is collected costs the city about $30 a cubic yard, the mayors office said.
That debris-removal job in New Jersey has also become controversial. AshBritt was initially hired under a no-bid contract to do the work, after Haley Barbour, a former Mississippi governor, urged Mr. Christie, a friend and fellow Republican, to pick it. Mr. Barbour is a founder of a lobbying firm that represents the company.
AshBritt also hired politically connected officials in New Jersey like George Gilmore, the chairman of the local Republican Party committee in hard-hit Ocean County, and Maggie Moran, a former aide to Jon S. Corzine, a Democrat who preceded Mr. Christie as governor to urge local jurisdictions to take advantage of the state-sponsored deal, as has been reported by The Star-Ledger of Newark.
Michael Drewniak, a Christie spokesman, said the governor had spoken with three current or former Republican governors after the hurricane, and each recommended that the state hire its own debris removal contractor instead of relying on the Army Corps. Mr. Drewniak also said the governor had not been aware that Mr. Barbours firm was working for AshBritt at the time he recommended the company.
So far, AshBritt, working directly for about 50 local jurisdictions in New Jersey, has collected and disposed of about three million cubic yards of debris, at a total cost of about $150 million, officials said.
The companys original contract with New Jersey, which had been based on a deal it negotiated with Connecticut in 2011, has since been subject to competitive bidding.
Even at that lower price New Jersey has paid AshBritt, the contract has drawn criticism, with some local officials arguing that local waste disposal companies could have done the job at an even lower price.

(1,451 posts)But a LIE is a LIE. And they are not being truthful. The pictures of Hoboken were devastating. And no matter what they say it doesn't change the numbers. Why did she only get 300,000 dollars??? They couldn't pump the water back to the river for that price. Let alone shore up infrastructure or rebuild anything. I am really getting tired of this tricked out charade that we must do with word play. Christie and his Administration are not fooling me. This shit goes deeper than just some mere political bullying. It will end up where it all does, the LOOT. The Mayors of the cities of Hoboken and Fort Lee have big projects slated for their cities. And Gov. Christie and his Administration can't get past the truth that they did not give Hoboken the money. So his Lt. Governor can come out and protest all she wants. Did that silly broad see herself in the pictures at the Grocery store.
