Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- Cornered by fishermen, divers and boats, the bottlenose dolphins splashed frantically as they tried to escape their human captors in the infamous cove in Japan.

Appearing severely stressed, some even tried to jump over partitions and flailed as they got tangled in nets, as seen through a live stream provided by the marine life group, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Dolphins separated by nets into smaller partitions bobbed up and down, trying to reach other members of their pod. The environmental group said that the dolphins appeared bloodied and they've had nothing to eat for more than 72 hours while trapped in Taiji Cove.

Dolphins to be slaughtered, conservationists warned

For a fourth night, more than 200 dolphins will remain trapped, where several of them are likely to be slaughtered Tuesday, according to the environmental activists who have been monitoring activities in the cove in southwest Japan.

The annual event is a focal point of the Taiji community's dolphin hunting season.
Defending tradition

Although the hunting of dolphins is widely condemned in the West, many in Japan defend the practice as a local custom -- and say it is no different to the slaughter of other animals for meat.

I really don't understand your question. You're comparing an inhumane hunt by another country with an impossible notion.

cruelty is cruelty. You think gun violence in Chicago is a good reason to ignore this?

And if you think dolphins are just like cows, then perhaps we should be eating humans. Our brains rival each other in sophistication.

so dolphins win.

I'm not minimizing this--just finding it odd the woman on CNN was practically getting the vapors and slamming her hand on the desk in what seemed like theatrical outrage.

meanwhile....they will NEVER seriously cover the epidemic of gun deaths in our cities.

They have cultures and language, lacking only our sort of hands. Seeing how this has me angry enough to kill those Japanese doing this, I have little patience for you right now for discussion on this topic.

You are quite ignorant about cetaceans and seem to want to press buttons. I feel sorry for you.

How are you addressing the root causes of inner city violence? I'm waiting to be awed by your activist commitment.

Because my experience is that people who respond to animal concerns with "but what about (some other problem)" aren't doing jack shit about that thing either and are concern trolling, but you're going to be the one exception to that rule, right?

It's important to get this out there.

I can never understand why the Japanese need to eat whale and dolphin meat. There's something about "tradition" or something...but, I can't wrap my head around this...when many of the rest of us know they are going after creatures of dwindling species..and their HISTORY should give them a CLUE...as to what that's about...

It's awful.

claiming that nobody eats dolphin or whale meat in Japan is mistaken. There are, for example, restaurants that specialize in dolphin dishes, and whale meat is sometimes served in school lunches.

in massive warehouses. The Yakuza is behind whaling and dolphin killing. The corrupt Japanese government provides these criminals with subsidies to continue their evil and vile activities. Time for the world to demand this cruelty end.

On the other hand, the morons in the Faroe Islands seem to be willfully ignorant of the risks they are taking by eating pilot whales.
