The TPP is becoming politically toxic. Over the last year there has been a steady stream of emails and phone calls to Congress. Members have faced constituent meetings and protests where TPP is being raised. Some examples of protests: Los Angeles, Seattle,Washington, DC, Salt Lake City,Minneapolis, US Trade Rep Office, Vancouver, Leesburg, New York City . . . we could go on. Americans have sent a clear message to members of Congress that they better not be associated with the TPP in an election year.
When Fast Track was introduced there was a backlash, according to public reports, of angry Democrats. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) told Huffington Post: Im a little disappointed that somethings dropped that was never discussed with Democrats in the House. As I understand it, it wasnt actually discussed with Democrats in the Senate.
Five members of the Senate Finance Committee told US Trade Representative Mike Froman they will not support the Baucus Fast Track bill because Congress needs to be involved throughout the process not just in an up or down vote after it is completed.

(8,434 posts)He can't win another election, so political toxicity means nothing to him.
The TPP will bring him millions per year though when he retires to the private sector in 2017. Millions upon millions.
It will be fast tracked. It will get passed. We will be fucked.

(24,692 posts)We will continue to trade under the rules of the WTO, NAFTA and our other trade agreements. I hope Obama wasn't relying on passing the TPP to fund his retirement.

(769 posts)All of large corporations in Vermont include Burton, Ben & Jerry, Against the Grain, and others are dead on against TTP because they knew it will hurt their businesses as well. They are paying very well, having better benefits and pensions than major banks for their employees. They are very loyal to America and Americans. Burton barely survived 2000-08 and knew they would lose a lot more if TPP succees. Vermont representatives and senators aren't going to allow this piece or crap legislation to pass. The small state could save the left of America we loved.
