TRENTON Gov. Chris Christie's popularity among New Jersey voters has plummeted in the wake of the George Washington Bridge scandal driven by an exodus of support from Democrats, according to a poll released today.
The Rutgers-Eagleton poll conducted about two weeks after e-mails surfaced that appear to link a top Christie aide to the ongoing bridge controversy show 46 percent of voters across the state view the Republican governor favorably.
That's a 19-point drop from the group's last survey, in November, when 65 percent of voters had a favorable view of Christie just before he was re-elected in a landslide.
The governor cruised to victory last year while touting a message of bipartisanship and bolstering his campaign with endorsements from more than 60 Democratic officials willing to cross party lines. But today's poll shows Democrats abandoning him: While 45 percent of Democratic voters saw him favorably in November's poll, that number fell to 19 percent in Rutgers' new survey a 26-point decline.
