We may argue and disagree a lot, here on DU.
But whenever a DUer passes away, or even loses a pet, we see DUnity. I like it when that happens.
I asked my better half why she didn't want to speak about the ugly truths. She said that when she opened her eyes too far, she couldn't deal with it. How can we tolerate ANY children in the world being deprived of basic necessities? The first rule of humanity: leave no child behind. That's why the revolution that we need is feminine in nature. Note that I did not say female - we all have different sides.
Deep down we know it's time to let the feeling in. We have rationalized everything, and have allowed our subconsious feelings to be manipulated. It's time to let our hearts speak.

Almost forgot to be clear, again.

For the record, I haven't hated on you in a whole 15 minutes!

(5,379 posts)a lot about a lot of things, but without these disagreements being mean. So why not drop the hate rhetoric alltogether? Argumented, spirited debate is the way forward.

(31,849 posts)ever, have used the word "hate" when referring to another person. But I, also, never shy away from speaking my opinion, and when asked (and even when not), will detail how I arrived at that opinion.
Too many people confuse disagreement/spirited debate with "vitriol" and/or hate ... especially, when they find themselves with the weaker argument.

(5,379 posts)I see it being used all the time. DU didn't use to be like that, under Bush times. I guess it's to be expected.
But personally, I'm also in favor of spirited debate. Indeed, truth can come from nothing else. It's why I appreciate DU's stubborn posters that dare go against "the line", no matter which line. Dissent is essential, and a debate needs opposing viewpoints. So, to all the pains in the asses that don't share my viewpoints: I love you anyway.

(31,849 posts)Many years ago, I was told "steel sharpens steel and pressure makes diamonds." That is the benefit of DU ... it helps to clarify positions and sharpens arguments ... and for the very few, it changes minds. I came think of a couple issues where I was firmly partisan ... until engaging another DUer that had a more reasoned, more nuanced position.
But I can never recall being convinced by someone calling me names, or by someone taking half my arguing (out of context) or just flat out mis-quoting my argument, just to when the debate.

(26,001 posts)The late author Iain Banks wrote that.
It should be the litmus test for virtually all politics, every policy.

Checked out Iain Banks - the quote is from "Against a dark background".
People were always sorry. Sorry they had done what they had done, sorry they were doing what they were doing, sorry they were going to do what they were going to do; but they still did whatever it is. The sorrow never stopped them; it just made them feel better. And so the sorrow never stopped.
