Indiana House to vote Monday on same-sex marriage ban; GOP rep. switches to oppose

Source: Lafayette Journal and Courier

State Rep. Randy Truitt says he hasn’t changed his mind about Indiana’s legal definition of marriage. State law says it’s a matter of one man/one woman. And the West Lafayette Republican says he’s fine with that.

But Truitt says he has changed his mind about a proposed constitutional amendment that would put that state law, plus more, into the Indiana Constitution. He voted to advance the measure in 2011, the first step in a multi-year constitutional amendment process.

If House Joint Resolution 3 comes up for a vote on Monday before the full Indiana House, as expected, Truitt says he’ll vote against it.

“I know I’m going to get labeled, in some way, pro-gay marriage or whatever,” Truitt said Thursday, a day after the House Elections Committee sent the marriage amendment to the full House. “I’ve already said I’m a believer in traditional marriage. But to me this isn’t about a gay marriage situation. To me, this is about a red hot poker, which is the second sentence (of HJR-3) being put into the sacred document of our state. And I don’t think that is appropriate.”

On Monday January 27th, the Indiana House is scheduled to vote on HJR-3.

A strong majority of Hoosiers oppose amending our constitution to ban protections for same-sex couples and their families -- and on Monday, we'll be at the Statehouse to show lawmakers that the people of Indiana overwhelmingly believe in freedom and liberty for every family in our state.

The vote begins at 1:30, but arrive early so we can pack the Capitol!

Eli Lilly, Cummins Engine and others. Homophobia makes it harder for them to recruit the best people. It isn't just gays. There are plenty of straight people that, given a choice, don't want to move to a place that is so quick to persecute others.

This is causing the Republicans in the legislature a real problem.
