(This is very long. It is one of the strangest stories I have ever read. How could you fool all of these people? Why would these people open themselves up to ridicule?)
The disposession of Latoya Ammons: Strange events lead family to seek exorcism
Nurse, DCS case manager said they saw boy walk up wall, prompting a series of exorcisms
A woman and three children who claimed to be possessed by demons. A 9-year-old boy walking backward up a wall in the presence of a family case manager and hospital nurse.
Gary police Capt. Charles Austin said it was the strangest story he had ever heard.
Austin, a 36-year veteran of the Gary Police Department, said he initially thought Indianapolis resident Latoya Ammons and her family concocted an elaborate tale as a way to make money. But after several visits to their home and interviews with witnesses, Austin said simply, I am a believer.
Not everyone involved with the family was inclined to believe its incredible story. And many readers will find Ammons supernatural claims impossible to accept.
But, whatever the cause of the creepy occurrences that befell the family whether they were seized by a systematic delusion or demonic possession it led to one of the most unusual cases ever handled by the Department of Child Services. Many of the eventsare detailed in nearly 800 pages of official records obtained by The Indianapolis Star and recounted in more than a dozen interviews with police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members and a Catholic priest.

(118,280 posts)when researching a political candidate
I found some interesting oddball stories, but they usually had nothing to do with the candidate
For example, there was once a big debate on whether so-and-so's massage parlor, run out of her double-wide trailer home, did or did not involve activities beyond massage. The town council debated this question again and again, always inconclusively. Finally, a reporter went to the double-wide and sat down for a chat with the young woman. His story made clear what a nice person he thought she was, clean and pleasant and so on, very very likeable, and then he got down to the nitty-gritty conversation: what exactly would she do and how much did she charge? The report was pretty detailed, and it quoted stuff like her prices for handjobs and blowjobs. A few weeks later, the paper reported another inconclusive town council debated about whether or not she could possibly be a hooker: about half the council expressed a conviction she was just a nice young woman, very very likeable and so on, who offered massages
More relevant to the OP: there was the "little man" reportedly seen all across the county was summer. Those who saw him agreed he was less than a foot tall, and dressed like everyone else, but in smaller clothes, of course. And the newspaper dutifully ran stories about the sightings, with pictures of the people lucky enough to have seen him, maybe beside pictures of the little footprints he left or the little hat he lost when running off in a hurry. I think there must have been a bunch of slow news in a quiet town
That OP tale is another "little man" story. The real demons that haunt us don't levitate little girls or walk little boys up walls: they try to convince us that the world won't be safe until all the jews have been gassed, or warn us not to get involved when we hear Kitty Genovese screaming for help, or convince us to buy guns so we can defend ourselves from kids wearing hoodies and armed with skittles, and stuff like that
