Maybe if one has four of those jobs.

(14,755 posts)So, maybe we should be arguing for $15 while also fighting for what we can get. Otherwise we're just stuck with $7.25.

(28,151 posts)10.10 would be a substantial raise for many people. People who "live off" much less.
All those living off much less would be able to live even better on 10.10. Your OP makes it appear you don't know about this.

(77,097 posts)richie rich, and they can't suck out more than 10.10 just WTF is wrong with this picture. 10.10 is not enough and I'm not falling for it!
JNelson6563
(28,151 posts)I don't 10.10 as the final answer, I see it as a step in the right direction.
And I'm not falling for anything. Most notably I won't fall for kicking this thread again.
Peace--

(13,340 posts)... yes, it's a good idea to raise the minimum wage. But the REAL answer is not simply to raise the unskilled minimum wage jobs to the level of skilled wage jobs, but to create more skilled wage jobs! Sure, raise the minimum wage to $10-12. But that won;t solve the long term problem.
Invest in infrastructure.... bridges, roads, electrical infrastructure, green energy infrastructure, SCIENCE!

(19,497 posts)Is that an actual call for $40/hour minimum or just spur-of-the-moment hyperbole to bolster the main point?

(19,497 posts)What you should know is you shouldn't make unfounded assumptions and you look silly if your reflex reaction is outrage.
It was an honest question. Is the OP expressing a need for $40/hour or is it just a rhetorical device?

(24,461 posts)I really can't take any argument why the minimum wage shouldn't be raised seriously, especially since 40% of workers now make less than the inflation adjusted 1968 minimum wage.

(35,296 posts)I did it with the equivalent in the early '80s. And again in the mid '90s.
Bike and walk when the bus is too expensive. Hitch rides with friends for stuff that requires a car. They go to a warehouse store, I ride along and stock up on staples.
Lots of really cheap food. Once I rejoiced when the day after Thanksgiving the grocery store had the turkey's they'd thawed for last-minute buyers on sale for 9 cents a pound. Ran across them by accident and hauled over forty-five pounds of turkey back to my apt. Would have bought more, but by the time I managed to walk back to the store the last one was already sold. Baked them unstuffed, stripped the carcasses, froze the meat and made broth with the bones. Really, by the end of the turkey run I was really, really tired of turkey, whether meat or soup. But for 9 cents a pound it beat the beans and Jarlsberg diet I had been on.
Hot in summer. Cold in winter.
No entertainment. Apart from broadcast tv. And the library. And walks.
Clothes were cheap.
Phone was minimal landline. Cost next to nothing. Still have the phone for hurricanes, when the cell towers are out and the elelctricity's out.
The hardest part was looking at friend who eat out, go out with friends for a drink, buy non-necessary stuff (more meat; nicer clothes; transportation; beer or wine). Most of that difficulty was managing my own expectations and being content with what I had instead of busily comparing myself and judging myself against others. There were those worse off, so I had things to be grateful for and psychological space to be grateful in.

(10,056 posts)But it's better than 7.25.
We need to make this front and center in the 2014 elections.
I agree though, that we should shoot higher. If we want to have at least 10.10 we should start at 15.
