Now I know those up north like to tease, but this is a serious situation for us. None of us have snow tires, we have no salt trucks, and no one has a clue how to drive on ice.
FYI if you are planning on taking that route. Hwy 90 is still open, though.

That's for LA, I'm getting together the closures for MS.

(14,910 posts)No unnecessary travel imposed by the state/local government in an effort to keep the roads clear and everyone safe.
Occasionally it's necessary even up this far north; I'd imagine it'd probable be a good idea for those who have limited experience in those conditions to stay home.
Good luck.
Be safe!

(39,961 posts)Hwy 90 will be open, but that is kind of dangerous due to driving conditions, but I-10 is closed in this region.

(12,155 posts)In the south we tend to get icing on the roads which without salt or at least sanding is near impossible to negotiate. With severe icing the best bet is to stay home and your home is at the top of a hill. That way the ijits can't get you. Moderate snow without an ice base is not too bad. Heavy snow and blowing snow is dangerous. You can't see where the road is and if blowing hard enough you can't see anything.
As far as northerners having great skill at winter driving just remember the giant pile up in Indiana.

(24,360 posts)I'm in West Texas as I type this, headed to LA on I 10. Went through that stretch earlier today. Rain was falling and freezing to the windshield, but the roads were still OK. Headed back across on Thursday. Hopefully it will all be well by then.
(I'm in the sleeper...co-driver is behind the wheel)

(39,961 posts)Hope you don't have to go that way, but if you do, Hwy 90 is still open.

(9,124 posts)I did have to chuckle though when I heard ya'll were freakin' out to one inch of snow while I was driving through roads with 6 foot drifts just hacked through by the county's plow trucks and they're all worried about 20 degrees below zero and 50 below windchill.

(9,124 posts)Sand helps but it's too cold for salt to do any good right now.. They have managed to keep the 4 lanes dry. But the backroads are just slick with ice.
Growing up here you get weaned on winter driving at a young age.
I had to laugh because some mom who works at the gas station I go to was going crazy because she was stuck with her kids for four days straight and it's too cold for them to go outside.
This whole polar vortex thingie wreaks havoc on us all in some ways . In other ways it's an unexpected no guilt break from our day to day responsibilities ... roughing it; one is forced to watch a black and white first season of Peter Gunn, drink copious amounts of locally brewed beer and munch on egg salad and spinach dip with a cat on one's lap while nature takes it's course.
Life is good.
