A Call to Rename the New Tappan Zee Bridge in Honor of Pete Seeger

A Westchester County official wants to pay tribute to Pete Seeger's environmental efforts.

Folk musician and environmental activist Pete Seeger died yesterday.

Now a Westchester County official wants Albany to recognize Seeger's environmental work by renaming the new Tappan Zee bridge in his honor. Greenburgh town supervisor Paul Feiner says Seeger deserves the recognition for his tireless efforts to promote a cleaner Hudson River.

"A world class new bridge should be named for a world class environmentalist who made our region a better place."

Seeger founded the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in 1969 to encourage cleaner waterways, long before others took on the cause. He used his music, like his song "My Dirty Stream," to push for a more environmentally friendly river.

The new Tappan Zee bridge, which will replace the current one, is expected to open in 2018.

Recognized not only for his efforts to improve our environment but also his for his efforts and contribution during the civil rights movement.

2. Great idea, but I'm going to miss that old bridge!

I know it's well past it's useful life, and it's probably really dangerous. And I know the new bridge is necessary. And I welcome it.

But I have some fond memories of crossing that old bridge. There was a special sound it made when you were driving on it (we used to drive across it in our old 1969 humpy-backed Saab) ... a humming sound. Maybe the new bridge will have a banjo sound, for Pete.

3. I love Seeger, but the Tappan was the name of the Native American tribe

that lived in the area, and "Zee" is Dutch for a widening in a river.

I think "Tappan Zee" is a name that honors the history of the area, and should stay. How about the Bear Mountain Bridge?
