That's not snow, it's ICE. I don't give a shit who you are or where you live ya' CAN'T DRIVE ON ICE.
Got 4 wheel drive? Great! All 4 wheels spin at the same rate and ya' wind up in the ditch. Got anti-lock breaks? Great! One touch on the pedal and all 4 wheels lock up making the on-board computer believe you are safely parked as you slide into the ditch.
YA' CAN'T FUCKING DRIVE ON FUCKING ICE.
There, I feel better . . .

(14,559 posts)Cars. I don't care if you live in the arctic you can't drive on ice. Snow, even at -20, is a piece of cake. I know, I've done it. Ice is a whole 'another matter.

(14,559 posts)why don't you just turn the heat up and open the door?

(7,800 posts)The snows falls, melts, and then turns to ice.
If the temps would just stay below zero, the snow wouldn't melt.

(3,186 posts)Ice driving sucks.
We here in the NE have no choice but to be good drivers when it comes to snow, or even the unplowed, deep slushy stuff that can sometimes make steering difficult.
But I don't know of one person up here who would ever claim to be a good ice driver.

(26,582 posts)It's not a freaking competition. I live in the DFW area. I wouldn't make fun of someone from up north that cannot take our summer heat.
Different areas are used to different weather.

(18,868 posts)Here in KC we are used to driving in bad weather. But people here are scared to death of ice. No one can drive on that stuff.
Our road crews are a lot better. They get out fast and their are a whole lot of trucks that work at getting gravel and salt down so that cars can get traction. That is what makes the big difference.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)What trucks are here couldn't get to where they needed to be in many cases because of already jackknifed 18 wheelers.
Our crews are overwhelmed in a big snow but not normally this incompetent. Virtually a "perfect storm" traffic nightmare was what happened.
Really the area should have been told to stay home but it's a judgement call that people are going to be criticized for either way.

(8,646 posts)we've had more fucking freezing rain this year than any other year I remember (I grew up here, I'm nearing 40 years old). One night was horrible. Of course, that was the night my parents had a Christmas party and paid me to be their taxi so they could get drunk. The whole way there it was POURING rain and freezing on my van on contact. By the time we got there, I had a thick coating of ice on my van, the wipers weren't working and we had to work to get the side door open. I have never seen anything like that where I live.
On the way back the roads were glare ice. Seriously horrible. The worst I've EVER driven on (and I've lived near the NWT border and driven on some remote highways in seriously crappy conditions). I was doing 30km/hr on the freeway. So was everyone else. On the freeway exit, some people - probably the ones who don't have winter tires, since winter tires do have a tad more grip on ice - were having problems getting up over the overpass and were sliding backwards. When I got home (a 20 min trip turned into an hour) the local news had all kinds of reports of people unable to get up the hill coming out of the river valley bridges, people sliding backwards, crashes, roll overs etc. The city halted all bus service. They stopped everything and called in every piece of snow removing and salting/sanding equipment. By morning, the roads were decent. I had to pick up my parents at 4 am and the roads were tons better, even though it was getting colder. It got better because we have loads of equipment here...I can't imagine places that have very few sanding trucks or snowplows. And even though people were USED to driving on snow - heck this year has been extremely snowy and so we were all used to it by December - the city came to a standstill because like you said, you can't fucking drive on fucking ice.

(46,318 posts)Are cars on icy roads.
Even in Minnesota, these drivers are a lot like the ones here in Wisconsin.
Yeah, they are "experienced in winter driving," all right.
Now take drivers who really don't have much experience with winter driving, say, a few southern states, and it's a recipe for *CRUNCH*
