Toward the end of December, Girl Scout USAs official Twitter account tweeted out a Huffington Post story about the inspiring individuals who should be considered to be 2013′s women of the year. The article included figures like Beyonce, Malala Yousafzai, and Wendy Davis and the organization asked its followers who else should be added to the list of incredible ladies. That was enough for anti-choice activists to call for a national boycott of the organizations popular cookies, claiming the Girl Scouts have endorsed pro-abortion politician Wendy Davis.
Were asking you to boycott Girl Scout cookies in 2014, reads a new site dedicated to the boycott, explaining that Davis should not be lifted up as a worthy role model for our children. The same accusation is being leveled against the group in regards to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who was included in a different news article about influential U.S. women that the Girl Scouts shared on its Facebook page.
The controversy has been building for several weeks. At the beginning of this month, Fox News Megyn Kelly hosted a panel discussion about the organizations tweet. Panelists suggested that sharing any material related to Davis violates the Girl Scouts policy to remain uninvolved in politics.
Davis, who is currently running for governor in Texas, rose to prominence over the summer when she filibustered a package of stringent abortion restrictions. That move transformed the state senator into the public face of a large grassroots movement in Texas fighting back against attacks on reproductive rights. Since then, Davis has become somewhat of a symbol for the anti-choice community, which sometimes refers to her as an Abortion Barbie and suggests that she stands with illegal abortion provider and convicted murderer Kermit Gosnell.

(3,445 posts)You pay for the cookies, and the boxes are designated to be given to the military after the sale ends. So you can support Girl Scouts and the military at the same time, and not gain any weight! I think most councils do something similar.
(Although it's always good to keep a couple of boxes of Thin Mints in the freezer--you never know when you might need one....)

(153 posts)I was thinking this seems like such a great idea - it would be nice to surprise a small group of service personnel in Afghanistan, for example, or at another post where they likely won't get them.
During the Iraq war and the height of the Afghan occupation, I sent a few parcels to service personnel via anysoldier.com - particularly to those who may not have families or others who could send them packages. It is a really nice thought to consider the Girl Scouts would ship boxes to these soldiers - what a wonderful reminder of home!

(67,104 posts)are not worth noticing.
Those moving on in life can well adjust to leaving the haters behind. If they take a hit in sales, move forward, 100% of the US is not all about hatred.
Using LGBT, for example, the haters in Austin told Apple they could not give partner benefits, Apple basically told them to go fuck themselves.
The haters told Wells Fargo they could not give partner benefits and they were pulling their accounts. Wells Fargo basically told the haters to go fuck themselves.
Apple is around, Wells Fargo is around. Now, anti-choice, is a little different, but the logic is the same, tell them to go fuck themselves, the Girl Scouts and cookie sales will be just fine.
People often pay to much attention to the haters. They are misfits in a civilized democracy. They are a drag on the future and are a depressing lot of misfits.

(16,844 posts)For those of you on diets, you can give them away as gifts. Just about everybody loves GS cookies. And don't forget homeless people, food pantries, soup kitchens, etc. And kids. I'll bet homeless people don't get cookies very often and it would probably brighten their day. Besides, if they don't like them they can trade them with other homeless people. The point is, you don't have to eat all the ones you buy.

(13,256 posts)Because of not wanting to eat too much sugar, I have not been buying their cookies for the past few years. But today, after reading this thread, I stopped and told them I'd like to buy some cookies without eating them. They were very happy to give me a quick and easy way to do that. You "buy" the cookies with a donation, and they send the actual cookies to troops overseas.
So everybody's happy, and the reverse boycott works like a charm.
