Greens/EFA of the EU nominate Edward Snowden for Nobel Peace Prize

Last edited Fri Jan 31, 2014, 02:42 PM - Edit history (1)

The Greens/European Free Alliance is a political group in the European Parliament made up of Green MEPs and MEPs from parties representing stateless nations and disadvantaged minorities.

The group was established in July 1999, when these two progressive European political families agreed to join forces in the European Parliament.

Greens/EFA is currently the fourth largest political group in the European Parliament, with 58 MEPs from 15 countries. Ensuring gender balance is a priority for the group: there are 28 female and 30 male MEPs, while the group also has male and female co-presidents.

The Greens/EFA group has nominated whistleblower Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination was submitted today in accordance with the procedure set out by the Nobel Committee (1). Commenting on the nomination, Greens/EFA co-presidents Rebecca Harms and Dany Cohn-Bendit stated:

"The Greens/EFA group has nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize as a symbol of our support for him and his courageous action. Edward Snowden has risked his freedom to shed light on the systematic infringements of the basic rights of EU citizens by US and European secret services through their mass surveillance programmes. He deserves true recognition for this and not to be bundled off into asylum in Russia."

(1) According to the conditions set out by the Nobel Committee, this is an individual nomination which is open to "members of national assemblies and governments of states".

Why the Nobel Peace Prize for Edward Snowden?

To express support to Edward Snowden in his current ordeal and to encourage other potential whistleblowers to go public to the benefit of all;

To recognize that whistle-blowers and investigative journalists can have a significant impact on the enjoyment of human rights by revealing, at their own considerable risk, the truth about unacceptable government or corporate practice, and thus may be considered as human rights defenders and peace advocates

To contribute to global counsciousness of common interdependency and shared destiny of humankind, which are conditions for universal peace.

To demonstrate that Nobel Peace prizes are not subject to any double standards bias, after the successive celebration of USA President Obama and the EU, and to acknowledge that the promotion and respect of human rights, peace and democracy starts at home.
