The GOP insists that people getting government assistance must participate in work program while on assistance. No slackers or takers allowed. Assistance encourages laziness and vagrancy.
This meme just came up on the Ed Schultz show. The GOP is essentially accusing the Dems of enabling slackers and takers. It is part of the Ryan "hammock" metaphor.

(5,420 posts)and I do think welfare recipients need to be working when possible but it seems like if you make it a blanket thing, it would eventually lead to people working for the government for their food. It just sounds kind of slavery-ish to me.
The republican party does loosen it's rules though when it becomes them in need. I've heard many people bitch about welfare and not wanting to pay for this or that, but once they are put into that situation, where they need help, suddenly a little welfare is well deserved, it seems.

(4,297 posts)WHY do the GOP repeatedly try to float this lie of indolence among low-income workers?

(6,169 posts)Boy does this "lazy" meme piss me off. Most of them ARE working! My mother worked full time when we were getting food stamps. And she worked her ass off and came home with little burns on her arms from the spot welding she did and swollen ankles from being on her feet all day. I'd like to see a Con tell me she didn't deserve a living wage!
In fact, I can't think of a single person I've known who received food stamps that wasn't working. SNAP is basically a subsidy for companies who pay slave wages!

The GOP represents power, wealth and corporate. Period.
Anything the GOP can do to insure maximum profit is what is expected of them.
Again I ask, can you name one thing in you're lifetime that the GOP has done for the common good?

(86,524 posts)that you must be registered with Job Service AND be actively seeking work to qualify for SNAP (made law back when Clinton was "changing welfare as we know it" . I know this is true because I'm on SNAP and can't have them if I don't actively submit at least one application for work/week whether there are any jobs or not. It's pretty hard to stay on top of when there aren't any jobs to apply for that "are reasonable jobs that I qualify for and can do"... when many are over a hundred miles from here, pay $7.?? an hour and don't pay for relocation.
F*cking scumbags rich f*cks who haven't got a clue and probably never earned an honest dollar in their sorry lives making up rules with high hurdles that most poor can't leap over let alone crawl over.

(10,602 posts)I certainly understand. Though when I was there we did not work with SNAP recipients then. I left in 1998 retired. It looks like they attached the registration requirement when they changed the program to SNAP. We registered unemployment program recipients and worked with the general public. We also ran special programs. I originally worked for a welfare to work program in the mid 1970's call the Work Incentive Program (WIN). Clinton screwed the welfare program up. And Reagan screwed up our very successful program that I had worked for 6 years.
I am quite familiar with the routine. I did not usually hassle anyone because jobs were difficult to come by even then.

(14,040 posts)A lot of the poor don't have cars because, they're poor. They have to take public transportation. Couple that with the lack of child care that allows said parent to get to work on time (usually has to leave extremely early to get to work on time) and the poor person is stuck. I had to take the bus to work yesterday. In order for me to get to work by 8, I had to catch the 6:15 bus, which was about twenty minutes late, which made me about...twenty minutes late. I can get away with that in my job but some poor schmo, working a minimum wage job isn't going to have lateness tolerated.
