ABC's 20/20 will air a show tonight examining children and guns. The show is titled Young Guns and will start at 10:00 p.m. et. It seems that one of the issues that will be discussed during the show is whether teaching children to shoot guns prevents gun accidents. You can use the link below to get more information.

(8,554 posts)There was a father on the show (who once had eight boys) who had trained all of them how to use and properly respect their firearms...he lost his ten year old son when the kids were playing around in the garage, while he was working outside, nearby. The man looked stricken, just telling the story, as were the surviving brothers.

This is what we are fighting against.
On the other hand, most kids would handle a gun just as poorly as many SWAT team members.

(24,853 posts)SHOW kids what guns do to human bodies. Make them look at PICTURES of human wounds. Make them UNDERSTAND that lives END or are CHANGED FOREVER when guns are mishandled.
Then TELL kids they should NEVER TOUCH guns they find unattended, lest they KILL someone with one accidentally.
After you have sufficiently scared them, tell them The Constitution of the United States of America has, as it's Second Amendment, a promise that the federal government will never infringe upon their right to own one, should they decide they wish to.
Guns 101a (Elective): Teach students how to handle guns. Teach students how to shoot, why, and when.

(15,315 posts)Because I fail to see the difference between kids taught gun safety who then go on to shoot the guns and the ones who don't. There is no difference. They're all kids who have access to guns and it was the guns that killed them. And the reason is because they were kids who had access to guns.

That's an awfully strange interpretation of something that requires them to be a member of the militia (National Guard). If you want to be completely truthful, we should tell them that.

Maybe you should read the Bill of Rights again.

Yeah? Is that what you're saying?

What it does NOT say is: "a promise that the federal government will never infringe upon their right to own one" (your words).

(13,869 posts)fully automatic weapon. That's a restriction. So limits on magazine size, types of bullets (various features, etc) can be legal too. That's why your earlier claim that "a promise that the federal government will never infringe upon their right to own" is simply wrong. It's just a matter of where the line is drawn, not whether there is a line.
cherokeeprogressive
(24,853 posts)There's a line, to be sure. Small arms are small arms. Some people like to make the argument "so, if I have to allow you a gun, why shouldn't I have to allow you a shoulder fired missile?"
We both know there's a limit to what normal, law abiding civilians should be allowed to possess.

(8,554 posts)And the two five year old boys in the very beginning of their "NRA Gun Safety" experiment were the perfect example of fail. They danced around singing the NRA jingle as they touched and poked and fingered that gun.
The program isn't over yet here, I hope this thread survives long enough to get back to a discussion of what 20/20 has illustrated.
