As Republicans look ahead to the 2016 presidential race, they are hoping to avoid the kind of chaotic and protracted nominating battle that dismayed party elders and damaged the eventual candidacy of Mitt Romney. That, however, could be a hard thing to prevent.
The party is divided and in turmoil, with a civil war raging between its establishment and insurgent factions. For the first time in memory, there is no obvious early favorite no candidate with wide appeal who has run before, no incumbent president or vice president, no clear establishment pick.
Meanwhile, an enormous number of potential contenders are looking at the race, including, perhaps, a return of virtually everyone who ran in 2012. Come this time next year, 15 or more of them could be traveling the early primary states, jockeying for attention and money.
The Republican National Committee is doing its best to prevent a replay of the spectacle of 2012, which saw one candidate after another pop up as a mortal threat to the front-runner. Late last month, the RNC began putting into place rules that would shorten the primary season and make it begin later.

(2,190 posts)Republicans are in disarray. That's good, it couldn't have happened to more appropriate folks.
But I'm wary of any focus on 2016.
We have to survive for two more years until we get there. It may be a good trick to survive until November of 2014.

The next presidential election is expected to be a testing ground for a new generation of Republican leaders senators who might include the charismatic Marco Rubio (Fla.), libertarian Rand Paul (Ky.) and tea party gladiator Ted Cruz (Tex.), and much-mentioned governors such as Chris Christie (N.J.), Bobby Jindal (La.), John Kasich (Ohio), Rick Snyder (Mich.), Scott Walker (Wis.) and Mike Pence (Ind.).

(30,058 posts)Right. Then they have classes to teach them how to curtail the war on women and then we get the libido subject. They try to say it is Democrats thinking when it is theirs. They have the lines of Sean, Rush and Ann as their spokespeople and they wonder why they have a problem. They are in our bedrooms our doctors offices making decisions which is not for them to make. They want to tell us who to love and let's nit forget their again Christians who tell us how much they hate this person or that person, forced births but do not care if the babies lives ir dies or has shelter or education.
After all of their terrible platform they present us with Palin, Romney, Newt, Santorum and Paul. WTH do they have to choose. Now Cruz is trying to out do Rand Paul and Chris Christie.

(11,619 posts)The Tea Party didn't help, of course. But the fact remains, Republicans have no one that appealed to a majority of the electorate. Anyone now who could craft a fake message that would be accepted by centrists and independents could not win the primary without taking stands that a majority of Americans won't stand for.

(6,342 posts)They have to take certain stands to satisfy enough factions of the party in order to win the nomination. But by the time the nomination is clear, the platform they have is not compatible with the majority of the electorate. Combine that with the factions of their own party that become pissed off.
The reality is...even if they had a candidate that was a Regan clone (held exactly the same beliefs and everything), there is no way in hell he'd win the nomination today. He'd be considered too centrist by the radical wing of the party. Even though that party seems to worship the man, he would be incompatible with the current GOP today.
