Hollywood firm accused of Obamacare spam
A Hollywood company is the first in the nation to be accused of sending thousands of spam emails preying on people's confusion about the Affordable Care Act, the Federal Trade Commission says.
The FTC has filed a federal lawsuit against Kobeni Inc. and its president, Yair Shalev, accusing them of enticing people to click links to sign up for health insurance, a requirement of the law known as Obamacare.
In fact, when people clicked the links, all they saw were advertisments for products and services, including insurance, the FTC said.
An FTC blog described Shalev as "one of the world's reputedly biggest spammers." The blog, written by consumer education specialist Bridget Small, did not identify the spammer or company by name but contained a link to a news release about the lawsuit.
Small wrote that Shalev sent "thousands of false, alarming and threatening emails disguised as information about the Affordable Care Act."
