Light but steady. Predicted totals are slight, one quarter to one half of an inch or so. Yet every tenth of an inch is needed. Hopefully the Sierra will get some snow.
(aside) 12 miles from the coast, seagulls are good predictors. Went out for coffee early this AM and the park was full of gulls. They often come inland when a front pushes through.

(1,805 posts)Lived there for almost 10 years. Miss the whole area. Sadly (for us), too expensive to move back from SoCal.
Saw a pic in the LA Times of Lake Cachuma all but dried up.

(106,886 posts)There's a classic picture from that time of a dog sleeping one afternoon in the middle of Main Street just outside the Tavern. I was renting a place on the hill at the south end of town. Great view. Great town.

(247 posts)We had a rainy day in San Luis Obispo on Sunday 2/2/14. SLO.weather.com says the season rainfall total is now 1.92 inches = 14.6% of normal. Monday/today has a 30% chance of showers. It would be nice to see some green in the hills.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)so, not being a lifetime resident, this is purely anecdotal...but..
I drove through the Palm Springs area just the other day (Truck driving trip from Jax to LA and back) and the fact that the mountains there had no snow on them in late January was rather astonishing.
I read yesterday that California needs steady, hard rain every day until May to bring things back to normal.

(19,459 posts)Snow in the Sierra is what we desperately need.
Lakes Shasta and Oroville are in the 30% capacity range, and Folsom is at something like 11%.
It's going to be a rough summer.

(24,365 posts)I used to drive down the Grapevine once a week at least. The difference in color from the winter months to the height of table grape season is dramatic (a large portion of the CA table grape crop is grown at the southern end of the central valley). The amount of water the table grape crop alone uses is mind boggling.
Yeah....you folks are in for a rough summer, alright.
I also used to drive up and around the San Luis Reservoir on a regular basis and have seen it at full pool as well as it way down. It's apparently only at 17% of its capacity, or less, right now.
Pics from last August from the San Jose Mercury News;
The spot those people are standing on would be under at least 100' of water at full pool. The straight horizontal line in the distance is the shoreline when the reservoir is full.
California Reservoirs capacity/storage levels, as of Dec 31st;

Best of luck, CA. Get used to Navy showers!

and I fear that's all it's gonna do. I question whether it will even be measurable.
On edit: I stand corrected, the rain clocked in and there will be a measurable amount, not much, but measurable.
The farmers in my area who irrigated grains last week are smiling a bit as this will go straight down into the soils.

(26,602 posts)Interesting observation about the gulls. I've never noticed a pattern - there always seem to be a couple of them around here - I'll need to watch closer...

(24,262 posts)Started this morning after raining overnight. We're at about 2000'. I had to go out and brush the snow off my Direct TV dish to get a signal. First snow of the year and completely unexpected.

(2,959 posts)day here in Oakland, beginning to taper off a bit. This will have no effect on our lack of water since our source is Sierra snow melt. I'm hoping for damper day this month and over the next couple of months.

(36,745 posts)Most of the moisture this winter has been following a track along the Canadian border. We have way too much snow in Michigan. Feels like a winter from the 1970's.

(84,711 posts)Who knows our Farmers here on East Coast...Organic and Otherwise are suffering through such COLD that their winter crops are not sustainable ... Just went on our CSA Farmer's WebSite...and her Winter crops got taken out by the Snow and below Freezing Temps in this last month.
Just Saying..Us Folks on the East Coast are with you All out there in CA where we get most of our Veggies..Wine Grapes and the rest.
We are suffering on both Coasts...and we are all in this TOGETHER.
Glad you are getting some rain...and wishing and hoping there will be more coming.

(32,324 posts)I have been feeling desperately awful over the animals. California bears are not hibernating, due to it being too warm, and there is nothing but dried mulch as far as anything for them to eat. Certainly no berries, and very little in the way of water.
Same situation for the deer, and every other critter and bird, reptile and insect.
Out in the back yard, I get absolutely screamed at by the resident squirrels if their water bowl is not filled. No water for them except what I offer.
So the rain (And even the snow earlier today!) is absolutely wonderful.

(12,530 posts)It hasn't rained in months, so I thought it would be a good idea to camp at a place in Bodega Bay. I'm certain this brought the rain we woke up to, miserable, cold, and wet. I've never broken camp as quickly as we did this morning. I believe that I tempted Murphy's Law, and I lost. Still, I'm really glad it's raining.
