BY SUZANNE PEREZ TOBIAS
A Kansas woman who received widespread backlash for her tweets about a Super Bowl commercial said Monday that her comments were a mistake.
Kasey Knowles, who in November was crowned National American Miss Kansas 2013, was among several people who criticized a Coca-Cola advertisement aired during the Super Bowl. The commercial featured a rendition of America the Beautiful sung in multiple languages alongside images of Americas landscape and people.
Many on Twitter criticized the commercial some called it un-American and an outrage because it featured languages other than English and within minutes, #boycottcoke was a trending topic on the social media site.
Knowles, whose Twitter profile at the time said Miss Kansas 2013 and featured a photograph of herself wearing a Miss Kansas sash, tweeted: Nothing about that #CocaCola commercial was American.
About an hour later, she posted, Im sorry if you were offended by my previous tweet, but I truly feel that America the Beautiful should not be sung in any other language.

Reminds me of Belle Barth's "If I Embarass You, Tell A Friend".
Retraction or qualification of the first tweet with second tweet makes no difference.

I thought singing our national anthem is other languages--was a compliment to our great country. Here you have these people from other nations, who chose to come here and make their homes here--and they are singing OUR beloved national anthem in their language. It is an act of love and respect for our country!
Can you imagine going over to Denmark, putting down roots and then ultimately singing their national anthem in english? This would indicate that you LOVE that country. Also, a symbol that you have retained your own identity and American customs--and you embrace this amazing new world. And you honor and celebrate your new home by singing their national anthem.
I think it's beautiful.
I don't get how anyone can see anything but beauty in that commercial.
I just don't understand how someone can see that commercial and react with such fear and hate.

(3,220 posts)You have these dipshits like the "T-Warrior" (lmao) running around and filling heads with nonsense about how non-whites are taking over our culture and are going to destroy the country. Yes, they don't outright say, "non-whites," but their dog whistles are obvious.
They're the ones perpetuating th culture war, and nobody is fighting against them. Nobody is destroying their culture. These same morons would have joined the KKK for the same reasons.

This Coke thing has blown me away. Hands down--right wingers are infuriated by the Coke commercial. They are disgusted beyond repair.
I don't get it. I watched that commercial and I had tears when it was finished. I thought it displayed that we are a nation of many cultures, with people hailing from all over the globe. I thought it was beautiful!
From what I've read, the right has their hair on fire because they believe that these people should be speaking english, not their own language. One poster pointed out that it is a legal prerequisite of citizenship to speak english. Their arguments are so bizarre. It's just jarring to watch them hold onto such outrage--over nothing.
I mean...what about "e pluribus unum"? "Out of many, one". Isn't that what this commercial represents in spades???
I don't get it. They are all on board with hating this commercial and they are outraged as hell and boycotting Coke. And they're not afraid to admit this crazy online. WEIRD.

(17,857 posts)the reaction was weird. She thought it was one of the better commercials. Still I am a little offended by using that song to sell a product (not nearly as offended as those who use the majestic Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah to sell products). You want to use the Stones, Bob Segar, even The Who ok, but leave Handel alone.

(12,448 posts)how fucking bad these people are. Until you meet and have to work with or around them for a significant period of time, you probably don't get how deep the stupid runs, nor how proud they are of it.
I don't care if you are a thinking, compassionate, and well-intentioned liberal living in one of the many cesspools in this country, the people around you, your neighbors, your relatives, and your elected officials are mostly mean-spirited, ignorant, racist examples of just how base humanity really is.

(24,411 posts)He is an uneducated, ignorant, right-wing hack who listens to Glenn Beck. And just to make sure that he's reading "the other side" he reads the books that Sean Hannity tells him to read.
The guy can't think for himself. He's a walking trough full of Glenn Beck soundbytes. All he knows is the talking points. If you try to have an intelligent conversation with him, and you start to break down the idiocy, he simply changes the subject and goes on to something else, "Well what about Benghazi!" and he starts up with the talking points.
Is it any wonder that these morons are also the same people who argue against universal healthcare and accountability for corporations? They don't know what the fuck they are talking about. They are just garbage barrels who fill up on junk radio every day.
I can't imagine living in an area of the country where you are surrounded by these idiots. Our population has about 20 percent of these types. That is enough, thank you very much

(3,563 posts)Here's her apology:
I wanted to take a moment to sincerely apologize to anyone that may have been offended by my words. I in no way meant to hurt anyones feelings and humbly ask that you please accept my deepest apology, she wrote.
Social media has made it even easier to broadcast your opinions faster than you have time to say them out loud. I accept my fault in this action but also ask others to grant me the freedom of that mistake, she wrote in the statement. As Ghandi once said, Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
She must truly love having the freedom to make mistakes, because she made yet another in her apology. Or is the Kansas City Star responsible for misspelling Gandhi?
