A new video from activist organization Human Rights Watch provides a terrifying look into just how bad anti-LGBT violence has become in Russia.

Using clips from videos posted to Russian social networks that proudly document the violent assaults against people perceived to be LGBT, the Human Rights Watch video gives a brutal and all too real face to the hostility fostered by Russia's state-sanctioned homophobia. The video includes clips showing members of the Neo-Nazi vigilante group "Occupy Pedophilia," which claims to protect children by luring gay men with false offers of dates online, then humiliates and often brutalizes the young men captured, forcing them to "confess" to their homosexuality or pedophilia on-camera.

In addition to its shocking footage, the video also features interviews with LGBT Russians and activists, who place the escalation of anti-LGBT violence squarely on the shoulders of the President Vladimir Putin's Kremlin, which passed a ban on "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" last summer, essentially criminalizing any positive mention or depiction of LGBT people. Russian activists contend that when they report the antigay attacks to police, officers tell them it's the treatment they should expect for being gay in Russia.

actually i could be mixing it up with other cases. but i know one of them involved a video of attacks on gays.

8. That was actually a gay person who was charged.

I think I know to which case you may be referring. He went to the police because he was one of the victims in the video. He was arrested. I don't know what happened with the case though. Currently, there is a neo-Nazi skinhead being extradited from Cuba, but it is for "incitement" and the videos from this "Occupy Pedophilia" (his organization which lures gay men on dates and then films them as they are beaten) haven't been included in the charges apparently.

but they don't do anything to people who may be involved in the attack and record it themselves just to show off .

but if someone posts the same video somewhere else and makes negative comments about what happened they will be arrested.

Personally, what is more frightening is the lackadaisical and "it is just a fad" type of responses I see in editorials and such. Most people are simply turning a blind eye to it. Think what will happen with all the world's eyes are no longer on Sochi.

I'm so fucking pissed off because I feel so helpless not helping those people that are being assaulted.

My family says it's a fault that I have for helping people that are under assault, that it might cause me harm. But I don't care. If I see anybody in trouble anywhere and I'm present to help, I'll step in without thinking about it. It's just a reaction.

18. When we marched on Hollywood Boulevard in the mid-1970's we were harrassed the same way.

Lest anyone believe that it was always easy to be gay in the USA, it wasn't. I have friends (now passed) who were arrested and jailed for holding their loved one's hands inside a private bar. I have friends who were subjected to electro-shock treatment when they were teenagers in the 1960's by our "medical establishment" because they were "queer". I have friends who took their lives because living was too painful. Right here in the good ole USA.

Long before the parade on Santa Monica Boulevard became a celebratory event, there were marches up on Hollywood Boulevard where I and my friends were attacked, had beer bottles thrown at us exploding on the street with glass flying up in our faces, had the ugliest jeers and obscenities screamed at us and where the Los Angeles Policemen (yes, they were all police "men" back then) sat on their motorcycles and laughed at the abuse we put up with. My friend Cosmo had his face gashed with a beer bottle in 1977 right on Hollywood Boulevard with the cops smirking at him when they saw it happen.

These Russian LGBT heroes are at the forefront of their own battle there and they have my compassion and admiration.

The human race seems to always need someone or some group to hate and to assault.

Scott Lively is repeating his completely baseless claim that gay people are behind anti-gay violence in Russia, this time claiming that a Human Rights Watch video about attacks on gay people is “just another piece of deceptive Machiavellian ‘gay’ propaganda.”

The anti-gay pastor points to no evidence besides his own hunch video that several of the assaults seen in such video are likely staged as part of a larger “hoax.” In an article today on BarbWire, a website run by Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber, Lively writes:

Last Fall, on behalf of pro-family advocates here in the United States and Canada, I sent a letter to President Vladimir Putin thanking his government for passing a law protecting Russian children from “gay” propaganda. In that letter I offered this warning:

In readying your society to recognize and counter the efforts of the militant gay movement it is important to understand that their propaganda and policies adhere invariably to the narrative that all disapproval of homosexuality leads inevitably to hatred, violence and murder of homosexuals. All of the pro-homosexual policies in the United States and Europe rest on this unstated and unchallenged but fictional premise. Thus, the homosexualist movement is not simply seeking social tolerance, or acceptance, but political power and control. They want the power to stamp out all disapproval of homosexuality in your society and to compel every citizen (especially the youth) to embrace the view that homosexual conduct is good and normal….In the coming months and years Russia and Her people will be increasingly portrayed by emotion laden and abusive hyperbole as bigoted haters, intent on exterminating homosexuals.
