One of the handiest add-ons for Firefox

Dictionary Lookup Extension 2.0

Highlight a word and right click on it and scroll down to 'define' and get a definition of that word.
Sometimes I find myself not familiar with some words I read here so to me this add on comes in real handy

Just in case anyone didn't know about this add on and really wanted to know about it I bring it to our attention

FastestFox gives fast access to search engines and if you set the Show Definitions option a short entry from Wikipedia pops up on highlighted words. Highlight something and one click on a popup icon will send it to the search engine of your choice.

to the Internet.

A couple very good dictionary apps are: The one built-into Mac OS X, plus 'Artha' which runs on Ubuntu and other Linux.

These use a locally-stored definition database, and also have thesaurus capabilities.

If you use Google to explore words and subjects, try using the 'GoogleSharing' addon (the original proxy server seems to be down, so configure it to use an alternate one from this list: http://kunfoo.org/googlesharing-proxy-servers/ ).

...using the GoogleSharing proxy along with all the other users of that addon. You are 'sharing' the same gateway to Google with other users, leaving Google with no concrete ways to tell who you are.

...is to use Tor Browser Bundle. Tor is a bit more involved, but its designed to mask your identity from *all* web sites. That goes beyond the scope of my original suggestion, however, which was aimed at preventing simple reference activities (looking up words, etc.) from being snooped on.

Finally, there is 'Https Everywhere' which is very simple and tries to make a secure link whenever a website supports it. So, for instance, Google would still know you are searching about X or Y, but no third parties would be able to automatically intercept that info without a great deal of effort.

All of these programs (GoogleSharing, Tor, Https Everywhere) can be used together, BTW.
