(12,233 posts)It's basically the formula to figure out the food assistance program. However, it conveniently targets states that are blue and quite large & 2 states that are wealthy, economic paying into the system tax revenues with New York and California on the list as they are.
At some point, states are going to have to pass a min wage = a living wage OR they will need to find revenue to help fill in the assistance needs of their constituents. When the food banks and soup kitchens can't keep up with the demands of the people requiring food, it's liable to turn dangersous; especially for politicians currently in office. It would be smarter to pass a living wage and some new labor laws.
Perhaps, California will lead the way in creating a progressive work/ labor package to include living wages, a leave of absence insurance fund (to pay someone up to 80-90% of their work wages for up to a year for maternity/ paternity leave, illness, of family emergency), a mandatory 2 wks off for vacation and another 2 wks for "illness" that can cover self or child (over time that maybe could increase to 4 wks of vacation like Europe does), and the normal work week could perhaps begin decreasing by 2 hrs until it's down to 30hrs of a work week. If they were to lead in this fashion, other states workers in other states would more than likely follow. The biggest things people want out if their lives are to have a job that perhaps they enjoy (or are at least paid decently to do), to feel they are moving ahead, and to pass down a better world to their children... In this environment we are throwing away productive members of society who could be doing fabulous work on improving America (just in infrastructure alone), that it's a shame. All because wealthy few run the money show, the politicians act as their puppets, and the Republican have now caused nearly 14 yrs of ruination, horrible decisions, and obstruction. They have NO plans. Anything that is remotely considered a talking point plan is doing it the Bush way on steroids.
And what's even more disgusting is that big Agra gets a bunch of goodies, and the people who buy those products have less to buy with. The SNAP benefit cuts in November are already causing Walmart to report low earnings and begin layoffs for their Sam's club. It doesn't make things better for them that the company is a dreaded place for Americans to have to shop or work.
What does this say about democrats, that they are that either stupid or naive to let this happen. It is one thing to get out smarted once but for this to happen again and again, maybe they are that stupid.
They're the worst negotiators ever

(11,986 posts)It might not be partisan. The cuts could be disproportionately affecting those states because those states disproportionately use the food stamp money in the first place. Kind of like the line about why people rob banks... because that's where the money is.
