Is there enough security at Sochi to prevent a disaster of Olympic proportions at the Winter Games this year? The opening ceremonies are tomorrow, but some events actually begin today. And the threats facing the young athletes range from toothpaste bombs on airplanes and serious hacking of all electronic devices to poisoned dogs and unsecured hotel rooms.
Maybe it’s just business as usual for Russia, but the dangers are scary enough for the US military to have at the ready a full-force escape plan for Team USA.
The latest terror threat to the Sochi Olympic Games: toothpaste tubes packed with bomb-making materials. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sent an advisory to airlines about the possibility of potential explosive components smuggled onto flights inside the thin tubes, the Daily News confirmed Wednesday. The warning, delivered “out of an abundance of caution,” came a day before the gala opening ceremonies at an Olympics where security remains a paramount concern, reports the New York Daily News.
The grim warning comes as athletes and guests arriving in Sochi for the Games, which have already cost Russia $51 billion, griped about ramshackle hotels not being ready — and rooms that are available often lack essentials like doorknobs, light bulbs, TVs, lamps and chairs. Some visitors said the rooms had no water and that when the faucets did work, they spewed an obnoxious looking yellow liquid.
On Wednesday, Olympics organizers came under criticism for their policy of poisoning dogs in the city. A Scottish member of Parliament said the killing “stains the snow of Sochi with blood.” But a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee said only sick strays are being killed and others are being “taken into custody” so they can’t disrupt the Games.
Black widow suicide bombers weren’t enough, we have to worry about exploding toothpaste? No doorknobs, water, or light bulbs in hotels? How many stray dogs are there in Sochi? So many that they might “disrupt” the games and therefore have to be poisoned? Makes you wonder how they’re treating their considerable homeless population. Was the Olympic planning committee on drugs – performance-enhancing or otherwise – when they made this choice?

He was so eager to visit Rome, and when he got there he found nothing but corruption, especially the sale of indulgences, which had gone far beyond anything that had been originally intended. Today, it is not unknown for Catholics to sing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" at Mass!
