I thought no one would ever top the Chinese Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2008,
but KD Lang did in Vancover in 2010.
I will NEVER forget what KD Lang did that night.

(39,909 posts)It WAS an overwhelming spectacle.
It was immense,
but it was about Conformity, Discipline, and Regimentation.
Stepping Out of Line was NOT allowed.
KD Lang's solo performance was the exact opposite.
What a contrast!
One Person CAN make a huge difference.
That clip still brings tears and goosebumps.

(8,361 posts)Their opening ceremony was their coming out party and demonstrated one of their culture of thousands of years including an emphasis on group over individual. Same confucian values as seen in Korea and Japan.

(51,076 posts)I remember when she first hit the scene. Too many years ago to remember but for the longest time I would listen to one of her songs every bar I went into that had it on the jukebox.

(4,788 posts)KD Lang's singing of Hallelujah was simply amazing. I must admit that I liked parts of the London opening ceremony too.

(15,024 posts)she manages to improve on every artist she covers, even those you imagine it would be impossible to top: Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Roy Orbison . . .

(17,111 posts)Elvis Presley and Bono have stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard.[3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Orbison
Orbison didn't have Elvis's looks but he developed a brooding persona that many loved. He and Elvis weren't enemies and discussed touring together. that would have been epic if it had occurred.
KD Lang was fascinated with Patsy Cline. Patsy had an unbelievable voice. Orbison opened for Patsy Cline on some tours. They both in turn helped Willie Nelson:
Another wonderful musician lost much too soon, Patsy Cline was a dear friend of Roy Orbisons. Both singers helped jump start the career of Willie Nelson by (her) recording Crazy and (him) recording Pretty Paper. Roy and Patsy had recently ended a tour together when Patsy was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1963.

What you have here is a confluence of unbelievable talent. Orbison also toured with the Beatles in the UK.
These performers put today's acts in many genres to shame. It is really obvious when looking at mainstream country. There is too much dreck and pop country now. There is some real country talent but too often it gets drowned out.

(8,646 posts)I've followed KD Lang since the beginning...when I was a kid my parents went to a club and my dad came back raving about this AMAZING singer they had seen that night. My dad kept saying, "she sure was weird [this was back in her punky cowboy days] but OMG her voice was CRAZY amazing! She's going to be super famous someday!" See we lived in the same province KD Lang comes from and she was starting one of her first tours. She was on tv a lot after that, our local station used to play a video of her singing in one of the local clubs.
Then as my dad predicted she became famous. As a teen I bought some of her albums. Loved them. It was extremely cool to see her perform in Vancouver. And it couldn't have been a better song. And she couldn't have done it more justice. *sigh*
