General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFor my first thread!! It warmed my heart to see
that most wonderful Coke commercial run again tonight during the opening ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics!!
Not only because I am so happy that Coke didn't pull the ad after the bullshit controversy over it...but because it was like Coke saying "F**K You" to all those that were offended by it!
It just BOGGLES my mind how the conservatives can take the most beautiful of things and make it ugly.
I smiled a nice big smile and watched it again and it made me feel even more proud and appreciative of all the minorities and immigrants that have made the move here and continue to expand our awareness of the diversity of the planet Earth and all it offers.
Also knowing more pea-brained bigots would be spitting their coffee...beer...or hopefully Coke out of their mouths choking as the ad ran again... ruining their evening.
As my ancestors would say:
Amerikka on kaunis millä tahansa kielellä
ja jos olet eri mieltä voit suudella minne aurinko ei paista.

"America is beautiful in any language
and if you disagree you can kiss where the sun do not shine."
Google also said that it was in Finnish
MysticHuman
(219 posts)and yes my ancestry is Finnish... to be specific, the Sammi people of Northern Finland.

(45,274 posts)A friend of Finnish extraction from northern WI has devoted several years to learning and practicing Sami shamanism. I have always thought Sami culture to be a beautiful one.
MysticHuman
(219 posts)A couple of my Brothers have really studied shamanism and have gone to a large Shaman gathering in Northern Wisconsin a couple of times. I can't recall the location but it is an annual event on the Labor Day weekend.
I haven't gone myself yet..but certainly would love to one of these years.
The similarities between the Sammi people and North American Indians is remarkable. The general understanding through DNA sampling ... a group of people in Siberia split. One group went East and one group went West. The one's that went west ended up being the Sammi peoples of Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Those that went East eventually ended up in North America.
I come from a very very large family of brothers and sisters...now we have our own children and to see the facial resemblance of some in my family to the Sammis is amazing. I was watching a video of a group of Sammis where I swear my daughter was sitting in the room.

(54,349 posts)Now there's a language we don't see very often on here!
(and I haven't been in Rovaniemi in decades)
It's a wonderful language... My Grandparents spoke Finn when they were younger. In the U.P. of Michigan where I live...we have the longest running Finnish program in the US... Soumi Kutsuu.

(22,845 posts)I could figure out about half the Finnish words, since our languages are so closely related.
I've been to Estonia twice, including a flight to Helsinki and taking the ferry from there to Tallinn on the 2010 visit.
Soumi Kutsuu - does that mean Finland Calling? Kutsu means call or invite in Estonian.
MysticHuman
(219 posts)I have seen programs on how the Finns ferry across the bay to Estonia for short stays on weekends or vacations.
Yes... Finland Calling! It's been airing on our local TV station every Sunday morning for over 50 years. They have anything Finnish related from music to guests... lots of polkas! lol
Clips of Finland past and present.... since we have the largest settlement of Finnish descendants in the U.S. if not North America right here in the U.P. of Michigan.

(219 posts)The first one... we used to call it "uuni juustoa" or oven cheese....
Living on a family farm we had milking cows and always had more than we could use. Uuni juustoa takes many gallons to make. My Mom used to make this and I have to say it has a flavor that is nothing like I have ever tasted. Subtle and smooth and yes it squeaks when you eat it! LoL...
We never used a topping...just heat up in a frying pan in butter and sprinkle a little salt! Man is it good.
You can buy this at our local supermarket and is good...but it doesn't have the rich flavor of my Mother's cheese.
It sells for about $17.00 lb the last time I looked.

I don't drink sodas, so I am not a Coke consumer, but danged, if I don't like their commercials (the one about "if you have bought a coke in the last 80 years, you've supported the dream" and all the Special Olympic athletes, now those Cokes I bought while in college seem OK).

(219 posts)I have been actually trying to quit my "Coke" habit! Drank coke daily for decades... when I finally did quit... I had a headache for 4 days! My body wanting that caffeine and sugar.
I haven't quit completely.... I treat myself to a 20 oz bottle about 2 twice a month. So now I just have to enter in all those cap codes and get what I can out of them while I can. lol

(29,703 posts)Coke is such a monster company. The rainforest and its indigenous population are being destroyed by the company's need for sugar. So, I boycott the company for the earth and the conservatives boycott for prejudice and maybe the earth will get a bit of a rest.
