It’s been one of the most enduring bromances of Governor Christie’s public career. He might bask in Barack Obama’s hugs and wither under Bruce Springsteen’s snubs. But as Christie faces the mounting public scrutiny brought on by the investigations into allegedly vindictive lane closures at the George Washington Bridge, his biggest advocate has been a man who had his back for years: Rudy Giuliani.

As the scandal has ballooned around him, Christie and most of his top aides have battened down, ignoring media requests for comment, limiting public appearances and hiring some of the highest-profile defense attorneys in the country to respond to parallel investigations by a joint state legislative panel and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and short-lived Republican front-runner in the 2008 presidential campaign, has filled the vacuum. He was the first prominent Republican to leap to Christie’s defense in early January, when leaked emails first tied Christie’s administration to the crippling Fort Lee traffic jams last September.

Even as others in the party have begun to line up behind Christie in recent weeks, Giuliani’s voice has been the loudest.
