February 7, 2014
So, if the Coca-Cola Super Bowl commercial that featured America the Beautiful sung in 7 different languages set off a firestorm of criticism from the xenophobes on the right, just wait until they get a glimpse of this new commercial by Chevrolet.
Its almost as if the company is taunting the bigoted segment of American society. In promoting its new vehicle the Traverse, the commercial features a visual tapestry of multi-ethnic and same-sex families with children, and includes the voice-over;
while what it means to be a family hasnt changed, what a family LOOKS like, has. THIS, is the new us.
Ending with a hashtag #TheNewUs, the voice-over touts the vehicle as the highest overall score for safety, for whatever shape your family takes.
It might be interesting to note that Chevrolet has a huge presence and a long history of support in the world of NASCAR racing, long rampant with racism and bigotry. While clearly this is a marketing stunt by the automaker, it also sends the message loud and clear that Chevrolet is ready to embrace the changing face of American demographics, most likely because they recognize that is they want to remain a brand that is perceived as American, they have no other choice.

(23,340 posts)it is good to see us finally represented on TV.
Movies and television lag so far behind what is actually happening in America that any progress in catching up with reality is to be applauded. The irony is that the film business, and Los Angeles, where most of this originates, is full of families like this.
