Bottom Line: the ACA has the potential to give workers greater freedom in where they can take their labor.
This whole idea that the ACA now creates a disincentive to work makes me physically angry. I've been arguing with conservatives since its passage that this was a feature of the law - not a bug. My wife has a genetic disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and until the ACA my career and job options were completely limited by where I could obtain the best group health care coverage.
I've left jobs because of a change in insurance. I never could have gone out on my own doing IT consulting (my field) because we never before would have been guaranteed health insurance even if I could make hundreds of thousands of dollars more than I do currently. I could never even consider small companies because we would blow their small group rating through the roof. As you eloquently stated, now the economy can operate in a MORE capitalist manner because people in my situation can best allocate their skills and labor rather then being tied to a job just for insurance. Many people not in this situation, or clueless conservatives, have no idea how powerful a feature this is of the ACA.

(30,058 posts)I was told the other day about only 47% are paying income tax, this from a grandmother who has 10 grandchildren from one son, bet he doesn't pay very much in taxes. FOX said it so it must be true.

(14,854 posts)They like to make it sound like individual income tax is the ONLY tax that exists, and everyone that doesn't pay that particular one pays no taxes at all. It's a load of crap. Most people who aren't liable for individual income tax still have to pay other taxes.

(13,598 posts)The reason the right hates Obamacare is simple: it's an extension of the role of the state into what was hitherto the realm of the private sector.
And a passionate ideological hatred of that is the absolute heart and soul and centre of modern Western Conservatism.
There's no need to look for even-more-sinister ulterior motives.

(21,115 posts)ipso facto...it must be bad for White people and only good for Black people. BECAUSE that is EXACTLY what they would do.
They think everyone is as racist as they are....you will hear them tell you over and over that "Liberals and Black people are racists too"....because they really think that deep down every one thinks the way they do. Therefore, anything this Black President does...MUST be FOR Black people. Therefore they are against it.

(9,033 posts)is an intrusion into the private sector? No. Empowering people is the problem and it is what the corporate-owned lackeys in politics have been fighting against for decades.

(31,849 posts)You nailed it.
The ACA has broken the employer-based healthcare insurance handcuff. By removing the health insurance concern, workers are now freer to leave crummy jobs, for less crummy jobs; lower paying jobs for better paying jobs, or self-employment.

(82,383 posts)they want the state involved in. That is a big lie of theirs. They have no problem with government, unless it's helping someone else.
Conservatives want to feel like they are higher status than somebody, anybody. Those who can't afford health care are one group they can feel superior to. It's all about their insecurities.

(11,646 posts)would you dare campaign on a platform of repealing it? I believe this is why they fought so hard to keep it from ever getting started.

(13,598 posts)I don't follow American politics all that closely, but the Republicans seems as confident as the Democrats do that the ACA will be an electoral asset for them.

(9,033 posts)The longer the ACA is in effect the worse it is for them. Some are already calling it the "ACA" instead of Obamacare...give them a little time and they will be taking credit for "improvements."

(65,616 posts)they are told by Foxnews that Obama is a dictator and this is his first step in gaining control over their lives (guns are next!). RWing politicians hate the ACA, because they are watching the working poor get good coverage and dropping out of the Republican Party!
THAT is the reason!

(118,600 posts)of skills being tied to an employer gives in giving the increase in productivity to the CEO instead of to the worker if they were to go into business for themselves. CEO like this overqualification in its employes (under qualifieds get fired or layed off). On the aggregate CEOs must make more in bonus money because they have these captured employees. Well not any more
