How can You be of service?

A lot of people comment on our threads that voting is useless, but it's time to understand -- there's more to a democracy than a presidential or senatorial race, and it requires more than simply voting.

There are literally thousands of positions in our local and state governments (both elected and appointed) that determine the trajectory of our policies and the lives we all will live. Women have a dismal record of representation in those positions. What does that mean? Policies that we NEED and WANT are not being enacted! Our interests are not being represented.

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a workshop put on by Emerge California -- a non-profit that trains progressive women for leadership roles in government. More than thirty women sat in a conference room the entire day learning critical skills for running for office, serving on appointed commissions or working on campaigns.

It was awesome to see the solidarity and camaraderie of women from all ethnic types and age groups coming together with one aim: THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WE CAN'T WAIT FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. WE MUST DO IT OURSELVES.
