CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 17-year-old East Meck High School student has become the first transgender teen crowned Homecoming King in North Carolina.
The announcement was made during a halftime ceremony inside the school gym Friday Night.
Senior Blake Brockington received national attention following the nomination by his peers.
"Throughout my life I haven't always been treated equally as a male, so I've always wanted this and everybody has told me I couldn't do it. You are a girl,' even though I've always identified myself as a male," said Brockington.
There were 13 seniors vying for the coveted title as king. Brockington won, collecting the most money for the school's chosen charity, Mothering Across Continents. It's a non-profit organization that funds the building of schools in the Sudan.

(17,184 posts)... and when an "inconvenient" candidate won, they didn't try to cop out? That is really admirable!

(4,876 posts)But the fact is 90% of the kids out there are AWESOME.
My son is also Homecoming King this year. He is Autistic. I worried myself to death when he started High School. All the horror stories about kids being bullied, I figured he was a prime target. He kept telling me everything was fine, but you know how kids are, I thought maybe he just didn't want me to worry.
Well, he wasn't lying. The kids in his school took him right under their wing. Not only was he not bullied but he was protected, watched over, and helped. He was voted homecoming "Prince" every year and this, his senior year, he is Homecoming and Prom King. I actually went to the assembly where he was voted on. To watch the kids cheering for him and calling his name was probably one of the most amazing moments in my life. I left the school with tears in my eyes and hope for the future.
