I've seen this before. I was in the middle of it. Several of us left NW SC to go home with a friend who lived near that corridor in Bowman, SC. We left school on Friday and managed to get back on Wednesday. We had 2 feet of snow.

(23,156 posts)A foot of snow isn't a lot of fun even where that kind of a snowfall is more or less routine.
Sometimes I feel as if it's some sort of cosmic revenge on those who were feeling smug about the rest of us because *they* had the good sense to move to a warm climate. As Nelson on the Simpsons would say, Hah!
No, I don't really think anyone *deserves* any kind of horrendous weather (or earthquake, or tornado, or drought, or etc) but this just goes to show that you can never know what will happen.
What's really interesting, is that I can recall distinctly reading some time in the late 60's or early 70's that the climate was changing, that we were coming out of an 80 year long period of mild and predictable weather, and that in the future we could anticipate more extremes of various kinds. And this was well before global warming was known.

(14,040 posts)is in my neck of the woods (near DC) we're getting such conflicting reports. Basically we could get anywhere from 3" to 12+". It's hard to plan for that sort of forecast. They're also saying with this storm that one neighborhood could feasibly get the 12+" and the next could only get 3". I need to get a job as a meteorologist so I too can be that wishy-washy with my job.

(17,111 posts)I live in an area that is usually on the freezing/not freezing line. In addition, the amount of moisture in the air can vary. These conditions change continuously in these types of storms.
You are in the same type of area.
There are not nearly enough places set up to feed weather data to the weather services. In addition, you would need a great computer to take all this data and run it fast enough.
Meteorologists are getting better and better at forecasting. I don't think it will be as exact as we want it in the near future.
