(3,182 posts)Except when it comes time to pay the bill! I do think it's more expensive than electric in this area.
But, at times like this, it's worth its weight in gold.
Oh, and it's here.....we have several inches of snow on the ground already and it's coming down to beat the band. You can't see where the grass ends and the streets start, either. The roads are simply covered over and travel is, no doubt, very dangerous.
DebJ
(7,699 posts)and the darn thing has electronic controls....so I don't know if I could light it with a match or not if the power went out.
Oven is also electronically turned on and temp monitored. We were so much better off with just plain gas. None of
those were even available at the local stores here.
Glitterati
(3,182 posts)You can light them with a lighter/match if the starter goes out. The oven too, though you'll need one of those long, fireplace starters or matches to be successful.

(3,182 posts)trying to get here. It's very, very bad.
We're good. We've hibernated since it started yesterday morning, and haven't lost power yet, so we're good. Really.
We had 2 inches of snow Tuesday, 4 inches today, and 0.75 inches of ice on top of it all so far today. And, there's still 4 more inches of snow to fall overnight.
Thank you, though, for the heartfelt concern.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)Although I probably wouldn't have been much help. We are about to get the same storm after 1 AM. It's supposed to be a snow sandwich with a filling of sleet and rain in between. Snow overnight until around noon, then rain and sleet, with some more snow overnight Thursday until Friday. The total could be between 6" - 10", although they said it could surpass that amount.
I'm glad that you're safe and still have power.

(7,699 posts)it's a tankless heater and the pilot is lit using the energy from water flow. So if the pipes
aren't frozen, we will still have hot water without power.
I buy everything I can on sale (why should I pay full price??) and keep the freezer full.
I've got enough roast beef, chicken and turkey breast cooked to last for a week; it can
just be thawed and eaten cold. I should cook some potatoes I guess in potato-salad-like chunks
for a starch. We have salad stuff. And tuna.
I usually have about 3-6 months worth of toilet paper because I buy it at the price where when I buy
three, the fourth is free.
We're due for possibly 8-12 inches here in York Pa, and we still have snow on the ground from January 21.
Today was the first day I saw any of the grass on the front lawn, and that was just about 1/4 inch of the
sidewalk edge and in a few footprints.
We still have a 2'x7' wall of ice at the bottom of the driveway thanks to the snow plow that came through
in the middle of the night...when it comes in the daytime, I rush right out and move the pile, but this
time it froze solid and hasn't melted much. If this happens again we are going to be pretty well sealed in!

(81,220 posts)Glad you're here! We don't have this problem in SoCal but I'll say this - it's a foolish person who doesn't have an earthquake kit. The conventional wisdom in Southern California, certainly, and up north, too, I'd bet, is - be prepared to survive on your own for up to three days. It may take that long before any help can reach you. And that means - if you need prescription meds, make sure you've got enough. If you have pets, make sure you have supplies to get them by, too. And always, enough drinking water - or the ability to sterilize it. Batteries. Flashlights. A transistor radio. And non-perishables.
You folks in the storm's path, batten down! I liked what Rachel Maddow recommended tonight - "when in doubt, chicken out." No risk-taking, anybody. Play it safe! I want everybody back here and arguing up a blue streak again in a couple/three days!

(3,182 posts)schools all closed, highways were bare and the DOT trucks could get through, and most folks stayed home.
I don't think there's any real preparation we can do for the next part though. Except, of course, stay off the roads so the power crews can get to those downed power lines when the ice comes through with high winds blowing and breaking trees and lines. And, so the DOT can keep the roads clear for the power crews to maneuver safely.
I'm gonna do my part and just park my family in the house and hope it's not as bad as they're predicting.

(3,370 posts)Many people around us had power out for days after last week's ice storm. We've had a lot of damage around here and our county was declared a disaster. So, the looming Nor'Easter, which is expected to dump 12+ inches of heavy snow (thus, the possibility of more damage) on us, is a kick in the face. Our kids have lost.....I've lost count....I think 5 days of school due to weather so far this year. This Friday was actually a make up day for snow. It was originally a day off, then they took it away to make up for one of the snow days, and now it looks like school may be closed. Bah!
The models keep showing scenarios that are worse with each run, so it looks pretty likely that we're gonna get frozen white shit on. I'm still praying that the storm will miraculously weaken or head out to sea.
It sucks for my family because my husband has lost a lot of work due to the snow. He will lose a lot of hours on Thursday and Friday, after fighting to get some extra hours on those days, so it really fucking sucks. On the flipside, I know there are other struggling families just like mine who depend on the snow for extra work (plow truck drivers, etc), so I feel half guilty for wishing the storm away.
Also, fuck snow. Fuck ice.
I hope y'all in the South are safe and that there isn't much damage.
DebJ
(7,699 posts)My husband is substitute teaching and we really need the money. So far we've lost six school days,

(12,051 posts)overnight and freeze before morning, and snow will continue most of the day Thursday. Everybody's stocking up; I went to the grocery and it was mobbed, as were the gas stations. Traffic was heavier than usual all day.
As I left the Y this morning, some guys were unloading sacks of road salt for their parking lot. I think it's going to be a big mess.
But....we have a gas fireplace and a gas stove, plus 2 generators, so we'll be OK. Freezing relatives or neighbors will be welcome. Lost and cold kitties, too.

I cook for my dogs, so have gotten their stuff to make for tomorrow just in case power goes out and is not back on Friday which is when I would need to cook it normally.

(38,187 posts)And I am waiting for the obligatory DU thread bashing southerners for staying home when the National Fucking Weather Service tells us to. No, we should ignore them and go traipsing out to our cars and driving right off the road on all our hills. We should be masters at driving around uprooted oak trees and pine trees that turn into ginormous splinters in the road too. We should be CHAMPEEN Ice Drivers in the Olympics what with our once or twice a year, at most, snow/ice/sleet wintry mixes we get.
