Would you have 'filled up'? Gas Sells At A Penny Per Gallon At Woodstock Shell Station

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/02/10/gas-sells-for-one-penny-per-gallon-at-woodstock-shell-station-after-glitch/
<snip>
WOODSTOCK, Ill. (CBS) – If you were looking for cheap gas, a Shell station on Madison Street in Woodstock was the place to be last night.
Amazingly, gasoline that normally sells for about $3.50 a gallon was selling for a penny a gallon for awhile.
Word spread. Cars piled up. Police showed up.

It was a glitch in the system, says Shell station employee Rita Castillo, who found out about the penny-a-gallon price hours later when she arrived at work.
“The first thing I do is run outside and check the price.”
And the price was back to normal.
Castillo says she’s not sure how many people took advantage of the price error.
“No idea.”
She says she feels sorry for her boss.

I stopped and got gas at my usual place and wasn't paying any attention to the price and when it was full I noticed that I had filled the tank up at about 3.8 cents a gallon. I went in and told the cashier and she called her boss and I said I would pay the correct amount but her boss said no.

Decimals are important!

... at a Home Depot self serve cashier kiosk. Whoever loaded the machine put $5 bills where the $1 bills should go. I got $15 instead of $3. I informed the management.

I sensed that any gas was going into my tank. No way to prove it, so I never went into that gas station again. This was years and year ago.

I'd have gone into the station and informed them that the prices were screwed up and advised them to hit the emergency pump shut-off switch and fix things.

I will not take advantage of someone over a mistake. That would be unethical.

Not a lot and certainly not that much. They make their money inside the store - soda especially.

But I probably would have when I was a starving 20-something who was angry at the world.

Whether my morals improved or simply my bank account I will leave to the sociologists.
