Maybe you should wait until there is some breaking news and see how they handle it. Perhaps this even means they've decided to only use the phrase 'breaking news' for something that really is 'breaking', not just 'the last thing we found'. That would be refreshing.

CNN is calling the power outages in the US south east 'breaking' (though, given the predictions of the storm, it doesn't seem that surprising), but the banner isn't in red - grey background, white lettering. So it looks like CNN has given up on red banners too.
